Returning to Fish keeping with Fluval Edge

Yeah it's a hob under that black box/top. Has the carbon bag, sponge and mesh thing. Ok so if and when I need to, just change one of the three media at a time?

Also, I'll quit dosing ammonia now, expect nitrates to still be too high so will probably be administering another hefty change of water tonight or tomorrow morning.

Called Ed, CPDs Thursday night!

I don't run carbon at all, but that needs to be replaced otherwise the carbon loses its effectiveness and it essentially just becomes a place for more bacteria.

Any bio media, sponges, floss, etc. just gets swished. But if any does need to be replaced I wouldn't do all three at the same time.

You'll find that a lot of the more experienced fishkeepers don't use carbon unless necessary due to medicine removal.

I am one of the ones that likes Purigen (same stuff in my AC 70 for two years) as it can be regenerated via bleach, and although it loses efficacy after each regeneration, you have years of use before it's shot. It saves you money over charcoal in the long run. Amazon has nice convenient 100 ml pillows for about $10.

Thanks for the tip Authmal. I will look into these pillows you speak of.

2 more days until the CPDs come in, and get added.

Ran a test tonight (skipped last night) and everything is holding true. Nitrate is a hair higher than 40ppm so I'll do one more water change tomorrow night which should bring it down between 10-20ppm.

As far as my tank goes, it's starting to look a little grimy and I'm becoming concerned. Took some photos. Notice the brown buildup on the sponge on the filter intake, and the brown hairy stuff on the driftwood. Also the piece of slate is starting to get a little dirt-like coating. Stuff looks pretty gross, hopefully there is something I can do to rid it. I recall Pappy saying it was common in new tanks, I guess my question is can I wipe everything off? I'm also thinking of removing the sponge on the filter intake completely, or replacing it with one that is black in color. Think there is enough BB on the existing one to significantly alter my cycle if I were to remove it?

Also: I noticed a microscopic snail on my back glass (was gone by the time I started to take pictures). Must have hitch hiked in on some java fern.

Ok everyone, done deal.

Picked up 8 CPDs today from the AquaDen. Along with some airline tubing and valve for drip acclimation.

Changed my water 80%, dechlorinated and this brought my tank stats down to 0, 0, 0. I'm guessing the BB are still there, and it's a matter of these fish and Rambo creating ammonia to trigger nitrite and nitrate again. At this point, I'll just wait and see, I'm growing pretty tired of it all.

Anyway, I acclimated the CPDs for 60 minutes before adding them. They are quite nice looking, though for now they are scared and hiding. Hopefully there will be no floaters in the morning.

Also, be sure to check out the General Topics/Pictures thread. I am going to plug some pictures of this awesome new aquarium store for everyone to see, and hopefully people who are close enough to visit.

Talk to you all later.

The brown looks like diatoms, which is the common algae to have in new or newly established tanks for whatever reason.

The fuzzy stuff could be a type of hair algae. How long are the lights on?

Good luck with the cpds.

I turn the lights on from about 7 am until about 8 pm then I switch to the blue "night light" until about 11 pm.

Is there a way to rid myself of diatoms and this hair algae?

No dead fish... Yet.
