Returning to Fish keeping with Fluval Edge

Thanks for your input too Orion.

I wouldn't mind if all my ram-horns got nixed. They are cool but holy moly whoever coined the phrase "hump like jack rabbits" never saw a ram-horn. They're like aquatic cockroaches. They've basically taken over. I'll be contracting these assassins Saturday.

And if my lone shrimp, Rambo, can survive multiple ammonia doses after miscalculating my cycle reading and thinking all the shrimps were dead, a couple assassin snails don't stand a chance. Rambo has gotten BIG. Even in terms of shrimp. I'm more concerned with what Rambo will do to the assassins lol.

I've not seen it,but don't doubt Rachel. These snails are being studied and might end up on the limited/banned list. They're very hardy, and while they don't breed as fast as ramshorns, they are steady reproducers if you have a male and a female, and their predatory behavior could be serious trouble for native fauna if they were released. They will bury themselves in deep mud to survive cold temperatures, so could be a serious problem. Hence the caution regarding spreading them inadvertently--most people don't check their plants for assassin eggs.

Hey all.

So I've finally gotten around to adding 3 assassin snails this afternoon before a dinner out of town. Just got back in and it already seems like one of these assassins have made short work of a snail. 1 down, about 1,000 to go.

Also, I performed my weekly water change, and the water is quite cloudy. Any suggestions as to why this is, and how it can be handled?

Thanks everyone.

Might be a bacterial bloom...maybe some organics got stirred up during the water change. Will probably go away soon enough. Just a bit unsightly in the mean time.

Yes, it's cleared up. And quite a good amount of 'dust' kicks up if I gravel gets agitated. This ok? Because of the very small opening in the top of the fluval edge coupled with some driftwood that sort of balances on a rock, it's hard to actually vacuum the gravel. I more or less drain the water during a change. Could it be time to change swap out one of my media in the filter? Been operating a little over 3 months since setup.

Well 2 of the 3 assassin snails I added are either killing each other or mating. Woooonderful. Haha. They've been attached to each other for about 12 hrs. Might have to change my LEDs out for red ones bc my fish tank has become a snail red light district.

Assassins breed fairly slowly. The female will lay single eggs at the base of plants, and when the young hatch, they'll go into the substrate and you won't see them until they're several months old.
