Gary, you've only been with me for 6 months, and I had so hoped to have you around for another 6. You were such a funny little snail, shoving everyone else around, parasnailing from the top of the tank. I still remember the time I was SURE you were dead, and you didn't move for a week. Then, you stuck out your wee-wee, waved it around, and all was well again. You had a lot of character for an animal that doesn't even have a brain, and I will miss watching you cruise around the tank.
Although your spirit has passed into the Great Fishtank of the Beyond, your shell shall remain as an ode to your life, and will cradle a new generation of shell dwelling cichlids. In this way, a bit of life will always remain in you.

Aw, RIP Gary. I remember when I lost Big Pink Mystery Snail- sadder than losing most of my fish, I think.

Yeah, it stinks. I think that somehow he lost the ability to control his buoyancy. For a couple weeks now, he's been floating around a lot. I just figured he was being weird, since snails do have a tendency to do odd things. In hindsight though, it seems like he was unable to release his air chamber. Not sure what could have caused that, but I doubt I could have done anything anyway.

I'm sorry for your loss, because he was loved he will surely go to snaily heaven.
I also noticed a lot of floating preceeding death, I lossed most my brigs in the fall when I suspect the phosphates spiked. Who knows though, there may be snail diseases we know nothing about.

I agree. She the majority of snail soft tissue is completely hidden from view, it would be difficult to tell if a snail even WAS sick.
Additionally, snail behavior can be erratic to begin with. As we all know, it's not that unusual for a snail to 'hibernate' for a month.
