Well, yesterday I came home from work, and went on my routine tank check. When I looked into the 75 gal, I noticed something that would have been funny if it wasn't so sad: One of my female bettas had her head stuck in a coconut hole.

After gently tugging and tugging, all the while pooring half a bottle of stress coat onto the betta for lubrication and comfort, she finally came free. Her upper body and head were brown, and there was a large gash on her stomach and neck. I put her into a cheap little betta container that I use for small acclimations, etc, added a drop of melafix and some stress coat, a few plants, and hoped for the best. This morning, she was dead.

RIP, girl. I would have named you if I could tell you apart from your other blue friend. Here's the only pic that I know was really her, in the emergency wing at the fish hospital.

i'm sorry for your loss. bettas can get relli curious (for boredom? dunno) sometimes, and then they go about exploring holes they shouldn't try to explore. I almost lost my Neptune from a hole in a blowfish ornament... how did he even think he could fit through it, I have absolutely no idea. But he was saved, despite losing 1/2 his scales and most of his anal fin. To be honest, I'm not really sure if Melafix helps my fish or not, they always look very stressed and agitated whenever I add it.
Anyway, RIP your little betta. She's in a better place now.

Awww, Dwarf....sorry to hear that, must be something in the air with Bettas lately!!

wow sorry sometimes decorations can be hazardous. One of my neons swam into one of the holes of my japanese tower and got stuck found it this morning gruesome sight poor thing couldn't escape once he entered first time that happenned thought the holes were too small for a fish to get into. I guess this one got adventureous.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to drill the holes a little wider (but with my luck my flagfish will go in the bigger hole!). I don't want curiousity to kill another of my girls :(. By the way, Anaerobe, is that your betta? He's stunning!

Bummer DP... :( sorry for the loss.

Ew, what a way to go. :(

I lost a cory once to the little nut getting himself stuck in a hole in lava rock.
