Ack! So today I went to rinse out my filter only to find a roach colony has made its home on it! OMG EW! Its a brand new Tetra HOB filter and they have set up shop between the glass and the motor. So, in addition to dunking the filter everytime I change the water now, any other ideas to get rid of the little gross bugs?

A small roach motel stuck on the back of the tank, between it and the filter should work. Also a sprinkling of diatom powder will keep them away, to them its like walking on broken glass. It also works great for fleas on pets and other insect problems but is totally chemical free and safe for higher life forms including fish.
 
yeah you can bet they are in your entire house. I moved some furniture in once that had roaches in it and I didnt notice until a couple months later they had set up shop in one cabinet and I do mean set up shop. I sprinkled Borax powder all over my house behind the cabinets everywhere. I only sprayed roach spray in that one cabinet. I had always heard they were impossible to get rid of but that got rid of them and I didnt have to treat but one time.

Diatomaceous earth idea proposed here is AWESOME (nice Dominion)! Go for it!

Seriosuly though, that is a a nasty story :shocked: Make sure you get a professional to check the whole house; I gurantee you have other infestations.
 
Call the Orkin man. For every roach you see there is 100 you don't. You have an infestation in your house. Roach motels and baits will keep them out of areas where they are placed. they won't eradicate the infestation. Your only solution is a professional roach assassin. It's time to put a hit out on them.
 
Setup Roach Motels all over the place.
 
C'mon guys, y'all are making this out to be armageddon. In Florida we keep them as pets! LOL Really though if you get a pro, let them know you have aquariums so they can adjust their treatment accordingly.
 
I just had an exterminator in last week for fire ants. He just sprayed around the base boards and behind the tanks. No where near the top. I didn't see any threat to the tanks. Not sure if it's the same procedure for roaches. Never had any. Thankfully.

I have to totally agree!!!! I moved in a chair that was given to me from a friend and in a matter of months I started seeing the nasty little critters everywhere.
Orkin came in and to this day I haven't seen any!(knocks wood)
