for the 2L soda bottle method of DIY co2...

search "DIY CO2" on the internet and there's plenty of different recipes and formulas for the yeast/sugar/water.

this is way more complex then the i use.
you only need one 2 liter bottle, the check valve, and air tubbing with wood air stone.
all the other stuff is over kill.IMHO.
mines been going for over 6 mnths now no problems.
as for gas seperater?it is the gas that you are after.

The point of using a gas separator is to remove the yeast "gunk" that tends to build up at the end of the tubing that's inside your tank. That way, all the yeast gunk is at the gas separator and not in your tank. Thus..."gas separator" separates the gas from the gunk.

Of course, the powered reactor on the left is entirely optional. It just aids in the diffusing efficiency of the system, which is important since this system is not putting out a lot of CO2 and you want to use as much of it as you can.

When I had my DIY CO2 system running, I was injecting the CO2 gas into a small powerhead, which chopped up the bubbles and dispersed it throughout my tank (20g). it kept a drop checker bright green so I knew it was working.

for a while before I started getting really into planted tanks, I used a single 2L bottle for a 20g tank, diffused through a bubble ladder placed under my filter's output. Worked pretty good.
