I just read that adding a little salt (about 1 teaspoon for 5 gallons) is good for the tank.. but also i read that certain fish dont like it like tetras and cory cats, which is what i have. Petco has them in all there freshwater tanks..Im going to my LFS friday to ask them.. What is your guys opinion or recommendations on this before friday.
Thanks

You don't need to add aquarium salt to have a healthy tank. I haven't used aquarium salt other than for treating ich, in nearly 6 years of keeping fish. Acclimate carefully (if you buy from Petco) and you shouldn't have any problems. :)

Don, that is pure bunk. Salt will have adverse effects to the FW fish in the long run. Long story short...You can look over osmoregulation topics. You don't need salt. I agree with severum mama.

It's not necessary. There's plenty of literature online to read on the subject.

So why do people use it?

I will third the statement and say salt is not needed.

Totally agree.

So why do people use it?

Marketing?

So why do people use it?
It's simple. They're either gullible or don't do enough research and simply proceeded as they're told without double checking what they considered facts.

PetCo uses salt to cut down on disease spreading in fish in their tanks

(I use to work there) and I wouldnt trust what they tell people
