salt question?

The salt you are useing is not aquarium salt. To be quite honest (and try not to be rude) salt is one of the cheapest things in marine fish keeping. If you can't afford sea salt (for aquariums) you should probably stick to FW untill you can. What are you going to do when you need things in an emergency?? Fish get sick, pumps break, protien skimmer stops working, And if your going with a reef I have to say STOP NOW, you will only cause yourself to lose money.

Patience is said to be the most important part of this hobby, IMO money is a close second if not tied.

lol i try not to take it rudly, i have money now, i didnt have money then, and i know how cheap salt is but im just cheap, i did get a bunch from my friend. but seriously most places here are a rip off, like where i work for a big bucket of salt its 100$ .... but i know cheaper places, but im not gonna buy salt if i already have it, im doing this as an expermeint and im almost out of this salt with all the WC, and it seems to work, and its cheaper so **** it why not?

Why not??? Well because when you buy any animal your goal should be to take care of it and provide it with the best possible enviroment, NOT to see how cheap you can go without reguard to it's health. Along with many other moral and ethical reasons. You could live in a mexican prison but do you really want to???

With all due respect, fish should not really be used as a "test", they are living creatures, just the same as us humans. It is very un-ethical, and potentially cruel aswell....

An old saying always springs to mind...." If you cant afford it, dont do it"...that applys to many area's of life, not just fish keeping. This is by no means a cheap hobby, no-one will ever say it is. So, the cost always has to be kept in mind when venturing into SW aquariums..

Just an opinion, and by no means personal, but i believe things like this do ahve to be said, but, my intentions are certainly not meant to be offencive or derogitory...

For the sake of discussion, and in no means a sign of disrespect towards Niko or jojo, couldn't it also be considered cruel to take these beautiful animals from their natural homes? Granted we strive to give them the best 'foster' homes as we are able to, just like any other pet. Some of us more than others.

That being said, there is no way I would attempt setting up a marine system of any sort without using the tried and true synthetic salt mixes that are so readily available. Speaking of which, I've started filling my tank finally, and I am using synthetic sea salts (RC):).

Corbin, necessity is the mother of invention. But seriously, if you are trying not to lose money, you should leave the testing and experimenting to those that are getting paid to do so. I'm glad that everything is going fine so far, but should things start to go bad you may want to consider switching to synthetics.

None taken SigPiPub...Its the statement that has probably been made by millions of people since the hobby of fish keeping has evolved..Not only for fish keeping, but, many other hobby's like vivarium keepers, bird keepers etc etc....

^^ what he said^^^

Also by that same thinking, the capture and captive breeding of any animal would be cruel. I also feel that my efforts to help provide tank raised corals FAR outweighs the negative effects of keeping them. I just sold 7 frags last week, If not for people fraging corals the reefs would be getting even more picked over and be in worse shape. Also the conditions of my tanks are FAR better than that of the LFS so in fact I am helping them, I did not collect them or ship them so I in essence rescued them, and then used them to make frags and keep more from being taken from the wild. I really do hope that some day this hobby will be self-suffecent with me and others like me and we will be able to help rebuild the reefs.

i just noticed this today, on my bucket of reef crystals it says
Warning: Not for human Consumption, May irritate skin or eyes in dry form.

Now on sea salt your meant to eat it, and ive never had a rash or anything while using sea salt, there should be a difference there....

Plus the hobby is becomming more and more environmental each day, clownfish are mass bred and i think they are the first saltwater fish to be massed produced (help me out here). Fragging corals can be easy and is recommended for people with corals too big for there tanks. We have aquacultured live rock that is just man made and not taken from our reefs, everyday there are new greener ways of doing things in this hobby. Sythentic sea salt where you wont be needing to take salt from the ocean. Hopefully one day we will find a way of producing most fish and lfs will have tank bred fish only, the freshwater hobby is getting closer to this level with most commonly found freshwater fish being tank bred. Wont take long for the saltwater hobby to get to that level.

If you are going to do a comparison between these two salts, do it the human way, use test kits.

Salt isnt expensive, i though it would be but i am wrong, it costs around 36 dollars to get a bucket of reef crystals salt that treats 160 gallons of water. If i change around 1 gallon a week or 4 gallons a month, the salt will last me a few years! And that is a trusted and recommended salt company.

alright alright... the only reason i decided to do this was cuz i had the salt, from brackish water, and i know a few people who have used it for brackish and even sw.

so im not the first, and it obviously works and its not hurting anyone.
and if you read im using Synthetic salts too.

i doing it as a DIY perspective, just like how you make a stand for your tank, the cheapest and cost effective way, im doing the same with salt.

and its all salt in the end, one is fake, one is real, just like Splenda and Sugar, both do the same thing, just in different ways. ones natural ones chemicals, and i dont believe in any kinda of chemical in my tanks, No meds, no water conditioner, no parameter changing, via un-natrual substances.

i in no way see its cruel, and why should i leave it up to the people with the money, why cant i do it for myself. you people are stange sometimes.

brackish and saltwater tanks are very different, might work in the short term but what of the long term?
