saltwater viv construction log

Looks like a condylactus 'nem. They're tough, cold/crappy water tolerant and have a very potent sting. Perfect for an aggressive invert tank.

I think what you have wound up with is a stomatopod (pistol shrimp)/condylactus tank w/ lots of crabs that do not yet know they're destined to be food.

It will sort itself out eventually

at the rate the nem is growing Im going to end up with a nem only tank:(
since I last posted it has grown even larger(about 10cm diameter) and could probably even take down a pistol shrimp now.
Im going to try and get it out tomorrow and put it back where I found it, hopefully without hurting it or me in the process..

Finished at last!:headbang2:

I finally made the hood. I made it from 4.6mm MDF glued together and painted.

for the lights I stripped down a couple of lamps-

I could have paid $8 for a baton, $21 for an inline switch, $5 for a plug, plus wire, or $8 for a lamp that has all the above.. so I bought the lamps.

heres a shot showing the whole tank

here in NZ we are limited in fauna to put in vivariums but we have loads of cool mosses and small ferns. heres a few pics of some of my mosses

Im going through a slow process of replacing poor performing mosses with moss that is thriving.

I have been defeated by the anemone.

I added some rocks to the land area which the crabs now live under. They very rarely come out to pick through the moss.
I think the anemone ate the biggest crab the other night:(
heres the biggest one left

In the future I hope to have coralline algae and sponges glow underwater on the fake rock. I will add some hermit crabs and porcelain crabs to the water, and I will add a purple shore crab and some shore isopods to land half.

and lastly the money shot

sorry it took so long:silly:

So the 'nem is still in there then? Or you got it out?

Tank is look awesome! *wants to go to NZ* I would do a tank like that, local and everything... but I think my parents would kill me if I got another tank... and saltwater at that!

wow, that looks amazing! your diy hood looks really professional. Smart idea stripping down those crappy desk lamps.

Great thread, first time I've heard of this being done with SW. How much topping off with freshwater are you having to do during the week? Have you been noticing much salt creep yet? I'm glad to see you are going to try and remove the anemone but I'd certainly not use a hook as was earlier suggested. If their foot is torn it is often fatal and an anemone can foul a tank very fast, especially one with so little water.

I'll definitely be following the thread to see how it progresses. Thanks for sharing.

Grins was kind enough to direct a few saltwater people here. I would have missed this wonderful thread if she hadn't mentioned it.

I love the idea of saltwater vivarium. This almost makes me want to push my sister to buy another fish tank so she can move her beta out of my 5G hex. My hex is the perfect size and shape to try a small project like that.

You did a beautiful job with the background and entire setup. I bet your crabs had lots of fun exploring. Sounds like you will have to stalk up on new life once that nem is finally gone though. I look forward to seeing a video of your tank one day if you decide to do one.
