saltwater viv construction log

Wow...this is totally awesome. You could create these and sell them on the web...so nice!

argh! salties!
youre probably thinking where is the protein skimmer, liverock and all that stuff?

I made it for a big crab that spends most of its time on land, so it eats, breaths and wees on land and not in the water.
If I could get a freshwater crab like a rainbow I wouldnt have gone sw, but the only largish interactive crab I can get is sw..
For the water quality I do a 99% water change every 5-7 days and fresh top off of 500ml in between changes.
Sounds like a lot of hassle but it takes me 10min to get a months worth of NSW and another 5min to do the change.
One day I might make add a sump, but before then comes an auto misting system and moonlighting..

as for making them to sell- Its a nice thing to say but I started on this thing last year!

lol I am sure us salties can reframe from the standard questions like skimmers and such. Especially since you have designed a very unique setup. You can't really apply normal saltwater tank practices with it.

The auto misting system and moonlighting sounds amazing! I would love to see it in person. What room is the tank located in? With all your hard work you should be charging admission fees.

love your set up...its facinating....pity the anemone turned out to be such a predetor....superb creativity and something different to the norm...i'll certainly be following this thread.:)

thanks for the kind words:)
-the tank is in the living room, where it can best be seen..

Iv noticed that all the wildlife pics Iv posted are underwater
so here are some creatures on dry land

these crabs are wussies that eat mostly vegetable food like seaweed and peas.

big pistol shrimp will not tolerate crabs in his pool. Its funny to watch him chase them, theyre terrified of of him:devil:

seaweed_640x480.jpg

Im trying out a seaweed and some seagrass. Id like to have the lower pool fully planted with seagrass, hopefully it will grow:huh:

nope Iv given up trying to move it.
I was right about the identity, it is an olive actinia. Iv read that they can live for more than 13 years!

here are a couple of funny shots of it and the glass shrimp

here is a pic of the biggest crab(also biggest creature in the viv)
moltedcrab_640x480.jpg

at first I thought it was 2 crabs, then I figured out 1 had molted:idea:
I think it is a very large smooth shore crab Cyclograpsus lavauxi
the most terrestrial of NZ crabs.

been playing around with macro and got 2 great shots of the pistol shrimps
