the algae idea was very good, as there is a bright green algae that thrives in the natural habitat that I have tried to recreate. So I got some and painted it around the waters edge. Unfortunately the snail loves it and spends all it time out of the water hoovering it up. (and not touching the algae on the glass grrr)
I'm going to keep it saltwater though. Mainly because of the crazy new crabs I found.
the hermit crabs are very cute and alway active
they are smart enough to avoid the pistol shrimps and disappear into their shells when the pistols go marauding.
the porcelain crab is my favorite
the blur is its comb-like mouth parts sieving the water.
its quite colourful, and unlike the other crabs its not skittish
it even comes to the top of its rock and sticks its claws out of the water for food when I open the lid
the shore crabs seem to like soaking in the wee freshwater pool, but its very hard to see in this picture
The plants on land portion are doing very well
the baby tears is even making a comeback after dying soon after it was planted.
I find the flora much more interesting than the fauna on the land portion.
I added some succulent type plants, Im not sure what they are but they grow in damp shade, and its fleshy round leaves contrast nicely with the strappy grasses.
