San Diego Water Crisis

1500 KWH cost $700..... WoW!!!!

My last light bill was for 4063 KWH and my bil was $414.00
If I used as much electricity there as I do here, my bill would be $2000.00

Guess I will stay In Tennessee.

**** what are you running to use that much KW? We used 1251 last month and our bill is 125.00. And that's with the kids leaving the TVs on, lights on, 6 heaters in tanks and all that.

i am in central calif ceres, ca and my electric is pretty cheap i have 3 bed rooms 2 baths and 11 aquariums running and most everything is electric here except gas stove/oven and my bill is around 80.00 a month and water i dont pay. but water here is pretty cheap we arent on meters just a flat rate. i guess it depends on where in calif you are as to the prices sure seems to vary a lot from area to area.

I guess this is what happens when you live where it is sunny 325+ days a year and 70 degrees year round, and never humid. There is always a trade-off. Gotta deal with the downside too - you can move to rural VT where we currently have 4+ feet of snow on the ground and had a week of -30 (-40 with wind chill) temperatures, and have really cheap and plentiful water and electricity if you'd like. Unfortunately, we have good weather about a total of 2 weeks out of the year. Can you tell I'm jealous? lol

I always wondered what people with multiple, large fish tanks did in SoCal and the Southwest when you guys are always having droughts and water conservation warnings. Do you forgo water changes? Or, do you do your regular water changes and screw water conservation (ie., screw everyone else and yourself by contributing to the water shortage and therefore higher prices)??

I once lived near San Diego and you could not pay me to return. Now I'm living in the midwest with reasonable prices on most things. The water problem in Southern California is a man-made crisis. People move there literally by the millions and there was never enough water within 200 miles of the big cities to supply the people there. What that has meant is importing water by pumping it from as far away as Washington and Oregon. Local water is scarce but does help out some with the total water needs. What are called rivers are concrete lined ditches that fill with water when it rains but are dry as a bone most of the year. The rain that they do get is mostly lost into the ocean because the ground that should adsorb it is covered with buildings and roads so it doesn't sink in to provide any moisture in the soil. If you removed all the people and the concrete jungle that they have created, the rain that is received in Southern California would support some native animals and plants without the huge water imports. Even a few thousand people could probably live within the ability of the natural rainfall to support them. It is the manyfold millions that use more than nature can possibly ever supply to a semiarid desert region like that.

Actually the majority of our water comes from the colorado river now.

My wife and I live in a 1860 sq foot home. We have a 10 year old standard heating unit. Not a heat pump. I have my 60 inch big screen as well as all the electronics to go with it. All that runs all afternoon and all weekend.
We have 2 fans and a 32 inch TV that runs all night.
Most of the lights in the house stay on most of the time.
We cook everynight with the stove and microwave and wash the dishes in a dishwasher. Not to mention the computer staying on 24/7.

I have my 300 gallon tank with 1000 watts of heaters and two 4 foot dual lights running 4-40 watt aqua glow bulbs.
I have a Eheim 2262 filter and two Emp 400's.
I also have a 75 gallon with dual 3 foot tubes, 1-250 watt heater and a Emp 400.
Last but not least, we run our heater at 75 degrees in the winter.
I am a shorts and cut off shirt kinda guy. I hate jogging suits and coats.
I may have to pay more for electricity, but I am comfortable year around in my home.

The Central heater is our main energy sucker. In the summer time, even in August, our electric bill is no more that $150.00 a month. Usually around $80.00
But in winter, it triples using heat.
Just this month we got hit with that CEMC energy charge crap they are adding to everyone's bill. Our's was $76.00
So you take that stupid charge off and our bill would of only been $340.00

Las Vegas...thats all i gotta say.

i have NEVER had a bill come in at more then $50
las vegas is prohibited to overcharge on water prices seeing as how we have extreme amounts of tourism.
so your best choice would be to move to Vegas :)
