Sand - Cloudy Water

Just a raw prawn in my wifes stocking lol ;)

It was peeled and headless tho.. couldn't find any raw with heads.. they were all cooked!

Seems to be turning all fluffy so I guess its starting to decompose now.

I would have expected a fair bit of Ammonia with the prawn, and the die off from the Online Cured Live Rock.

I will keep monitoring :)

LOL...I hope you took her leg out of it first.... ;)

As your only in day two, its very early days so far...Leave the prawn in there untill your ammonia rises to about 4 - 5ppm and then remove it, as this will then ensure that you have a good bacteria level generated in the aquarium..

Good deal, your off to a great start

Day 3 Levels:

Ammonia seems to be going down already - the rotting prawn is still in. Nitrates are higher, but Nitrites are still the same, max on my chart.

I was expecting the Ammonia to go to 3-4ppm not peak at 0.75 :( I will test again in 2 days to see what its like then.

SG has gone up more towards 1025 now but I am using a Hydrometer so maybe a bit inaccurate. Should I do top ups during cycle? A fair bit, maybe 1cm of water has evaporated so may explain the SG going up.

It oculd be your live rock is very activly converting the ammonia to nitritres...seems a little odd for the time its been in there..what i would do is leave it in there for at least another 5 - 7 days and watch the ammonia, see what reaction you get...after only 3 days, the raw prawn will not of fully started to decompose in my opinion..

I thought that Niko, maybe the Ammonia was quickly being turned in to Nitrites.. but like you say doubt it this early on.

Maybe its just the die off from the rock and the Ammonia from the prawn hasn't built up very much yet. Nitrites seem very high though compared to Ammonia.. I will leave it in for another week and just keep checking every couple of days :)

Thanks for advice :D

Did I miss something or did you not do a FW dip for predators? Also, why the prawn, when you are cycling with the rock?

I'm not the original poster, but a guess here is that they'd want to use an additional ammonia source to be sure that enough ammonia was introduced to better ensure that the tank could handle a future bioload. Prawn isn't always needed for that when you're using uncured live rock, but when you're using cured rock it is nice to see the ammonia climb up and then watch the tank handle it. Otherwise you never really get a chance to see the ammonia has gone through the cycle.

Rock that has been shipped, is never totally cured.
