i doubt that i can do sand dwellers but according to reservestockcichlids.com i can put in Callochromis melanostigma Burundi, Ectodus descampsi, Xenotilapia flavipinnis Kekese Red, Xenotilapia flavipinnis Kigoma, Xenotilapia flavipinnis Magara in a 30 gallon. is this true or inaccurate information?i wuld love to have some of these.

I would venture to say maybe a couple will, you will just have to try it and see what works but be prepared to remove some fish just in case.. Also how big they reach and what could fit in such a smaller setup.. Agression wise i can tell you if they have the name Tanganyika attached it will be in some way aggressive.. Sorry i know i am not much help but just treat them as regular Tangs on aggression wise..

At one time I wanted to put in some sand sifters with my kilesa. THey're in a 75 and I was told there is no way I could fit both. That's more than twice the size your thinking about and I couldn't have two trios of different species, so I wouldnt' think you could fit one trio of a single species. Plus, look at their adult sizes, they need more space.

Well the reason you could not put sand sifters in with your kilsea is that kilsea are sand sifters and there would be too much competition.

The xenos you mentioned don't get too big so I think you could get away with 6 or so in a 30 gallon. I wouldn't say a 30 gallon would be optimal, but it could be done with careful attention to water changes. I wouldn't put anything else in the tank though.

Sorry my earlier reply wasn't complete. I was only referring to the xenos, I am not sure about the chalinochromis or the ectodus. I don't have any experience with those 2 but do with the xenos.

You could put 3 or 4 J. ornatus in a 15 gallon tank, they aren't as aggressive as the larger julis.

thanks on the info about the xenos. i may look into buying some.

about the J. ornatus. they may not be as aggressive but they top out at 4inches. and for 4 of them in a 15 gallon. well that sure seems like alot. maybe as juviniles but once they are grown a 15g is no home for that many fish that size.

As long as you go with only one, maybe two males, it could work. Just make sure there is mainly open sand bed.

I disagree. Even the less aggressive julies cannot live with more than a pair in that small of a tank for long...
