Scarlet badis / Dario dario - Does anyone have any?

If you're looking for something small and funky that not a lot of people have why don't you check out killifish? You could do a pair in a 5.5 gallon, no problem.

There are lots of different killifish species though, right? What kind would you recommend? Also, when you say pair, I assume you mean 1 male and 1 female. Would this cause any problems for me?

You hit it dead on, by the way. Definitely looking for something different.
I do plan on getting me some Dario dario in the future, though. Just have to wait for permission to put my 10 gallon back in commission.

A 5.5 would be able to house 2 males comfortably. Each male needs approx. 3 gallons. They're too small to do any physical damage to each other, but stress can become an issue if the can't establish territories.

If you can find females I will pay you to send some my way.

I've had mine for a few months now and they're already my favorite nano fish, highly entertaining and gorgeously colored.

Yes, I mean one male and one female. They will get a long well in a 5 gallon. Breeding kilifish is kind of difficult so you probably wouldn't have to worry about babies unless you decide to breed them. I keep gold australes but there are lots of different kinds that are all very different looking. Take a look at Aquabid and you can get an idea of what is out there. You also might want to check to see if you have a killifish club in your area. That's always the best place to get healthy fish and good info on how to keep and breed them.

Are you talking about the Dario dario or the killifish?

Death Pony I hope you have better luck than me. My darios got along okay for a few months, except for the one they ganged up on and killed the first week. Two slowly wasted away because the dominant male wouldn't let them eat. I'd separate them, get them healthy, rescape the tank with more hiding spots and try again. I lost one because he jumped out of the tank, I assume while trying to get away from the dominant male. The other one I found shredded at the bottom of the tank. The dominant male lived out the rest of his days in a big tank all by himself.

I have about 10 dario dario in my 29 gallon tank. They are super duper awesome fish, only wish they would breed. I believe I should have a few females to male ratio.. I usually see vibrant red males and a few flushed out pale ones that would likely be females. White body with red lines.

Also trying to get them to breed but no go yet....

Also I am on the hunt for females lol.... I emailed all my suppliers ahead of time as it is.

Yup, I'm talking about the darios. I have 3 in a 6 gallon Eclipse. I recently sold 3 to a friend. It's a heavily planted tank, so the line of sight is pretty broken up and there's enough floor space for them to establish territories. All of them get a blackworm a day and they're all showing good colors. If I can find females, I'll definitely sell more of them.

Females are harder to find than I expected. I bought a group of 6, which included some very pale, dull individuals. They all turned out to be male. The key to finding females in mature specimens is to look for clear fins. Males will always have red in their fins, even when stressed. They can mute their colors drastically when stressed, or trying to avoid the attention of dominant males. Here's a good example;

I thought for sure this was a female;

This is the same fish, 2 months later;

Now I feel conflicted. I'll just have to what my LFS has.

I had to LOL in real life when I saw those 2 pictures death pony. :lipssealedsmilie:

Also anubias leaves are in my opinion the BEST when feeding dario dario live microworms. Its curved enough like a bowl and the darios go crazy to snatch up the worms. Plus it catches the MW so they don't fall straight into the substrate.
