Okay, so this may sound really dumb to a lot of you, but I wanted to comment on it anyway. Though I've had a tank for about 3 years, I'm relatively new to real fishkeeping. I have a 29 gallon tank (specs in the signature), and it previously held only 3 neon tetras (along with the rest of the fish on the list). I added 4 neons just a couple of days ago to bring my total up to 7. It is amazing to see how different it was having 7 instead of 3. It was such a dramatic difference, one that I never quite expected. They stick together pretty well, and their colors are much more brilliant than before. It's just really cool to see them schooling like that. In fact, I liked it so much that I've got 5 more neons in qt right now to round out to a full school of 12! They're beautiful!

It's my first really effective looking school. Just thought I'd share my joys!

That doesn't sound dumb at all...enjoying the simple beauty of our fish displaying their normal behavior is what the hobby is all about...

I hear you... that is one reason i returned my small group of neons. they just didn't seem happy in a small group.

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but can you tell me if adding a group of 7 neons (or cardinals) to a 29 gallon that currently houses 3 blackskirts, 1 betta, and 2 flying fox is too much bioload?

Thanks and i hope to see the same results when i get some of these fish this weekend

Neons are one of the great fish of the hobby. They are "common" for a reason, being one of the most beautiful and small freshwater fish.

will regular neons school with cardinal neons?
yes...some folks like to do but I find it distracting as they look slightly different once you know what to look for....I've got neons now, but would much prefer a full school of cards. my lfs just doesn't carry cards that often
