Schooling neons...wow!

Neons

Back when I worked at Big Al's we use to put between 1000 and 1500 neons in a 100 gallon tank (it was on a 2000 gallon system) with medium lighting and black gravel.

WOW what a sight to watch. they would all school together and with the way that the tank was set up the colors of the neons beamed incredibly.

I've never had a group of neons bigger than 4... After hearing all the 'oohs' and 'aahs' I intend to do so once I have an aquarium free for it!!

Oh! And I agree about the corydoras. They love to be in a group as much as tetras do and they show better color and do much better in a school of 4-5. Once you find homes for your CAEs, I'd suggest adding 4 cories (of a similar kind once you know what you have. A photo reference would help us categorize him for you) as long as you have no designs toward buying plecos at all. ^_^

before there's a run on all of the 'schooling' neons, folks might want to check this thread out http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95222&highlight=neons+school I'll confirm that not all neons will school. I once had a dozen neons or so that were all over the tank, all the time. I'm fortunate that my current neons are good schoolers, but I suspect that's got a lot to do with the other fish in the tank. My school of giant danios usually buzz around the tank at a pretty good clip....I'm fairly certain this commotion is at least partly responsible for the neon schooling. Somtimes they break into 2 schools (one one each side of the tank). There's always 1-2 adventurous souls who will strike out on their own at any given time.

Anyway, some of the folks running out to buy neons this weekend may be disappointed, while others will get what they bargained for.

You know I have a school of 12 neons in my 55 gallon, and they have never schooled maybe first thing in the morning for one minute, then last night for some reason they must have been scared (probably by their own shadow on the glass) and they were really schooling for a while and hovering and swimming in stealth mode it really was fantastic to see.... But yeah i've had mine in a big group for a few weeks and last night was a first.. :)

My LFS has no more Neons.

Have 7 in there now and want to get up to about 15-20 for my 120 gallon.

So what do I do with fish that are suppossed to be schoolers but for some reason or another I always end up with just nine bloodfin tetras in my 125? There are a few rainbows in the tank with them too but even when I try to add to this school, it always seems that the magic number is nine bloodfins. Please help me figure this one out because I would really prefer to have the school at 30-40 bloodfins. I just don't want to waste my money if there is some underlying reason for the number to always be nine bloodfins.

I thought about this but I have watched the tank on several occassions over the last weeks and it seems that the rainbows pretty much ignore the bloodfins. I have also observed this tank after lights out and I am not seeing any funny monkey business. The water paremeters are excellent and the filteration is more then adequate. It has two eheim classic's 2215's along with an aquaclear 110/500. My only other consideration would be the two pictus cats that are also in this tank but again I have not seen any interaction between them.

I think neons are terrific little fish. I completely enjoy watching my '6-pack' do their thing! In fact, I'm going to get a few more tomorrow!
