Schultz Aquatic soil

i put a very shallow layer of regular natural colored gravel on top of the 3" of SAS i have in my 15 gallon. works well...have yet to have any issues with it being too light

I added the SAS yesterday without washing it...It was cloudy for a while but was crystal clear this morning...But I also noticed that the BBA in my tank had grow a considerable amount over night...and just a few minutes ago I noticed the fish gasping at the top of the tank so I tested the water for ammonia and it was extremely high so I am currently doing a 50% water change, adding Ammonia Detox, and adding an airstone....What I dont understand what could have caused it? I never had an ammonia problem until I added the SAS...Was it because I did not wash it?:wall::wall:
:help2:

I changed mine from garval to SAS I had no ammonia or cycling problems. Did a lot of gunk get stirred up as you added the SAS? That could cause an ammonia spike. The little BBA I have in that tank never changed its growth rate.

Do you think it was because I took out the majority of the sand which contained beneficial bacteria and now I have less of it...I also rinsed my canister filter out a little bit because some of the SAS got sucked in there.....
