sealing wood

When we finish things in epoxy at school we go for cheap, strong, and scratch proof. We use a two part epoxy that is made for filling in holes in the sheet metal of your car. We just leave out the fiberglass. It is an opaque almost light amber color and I find it quite attractive actually. I don't know how safe it is though for an animal.

I suggest you use what we use on our cups. It is a food grade 2 part epoxy. I'm not sure what it is called but if its food grade and usable on human application that it out to be safe for an animal. It also stands up very well. When we coat our entire projects in them we can even wash them in the dishwasher and they take several years for them to lose their finish.

If its very big I suggest making it into a cup instead. They look absolutley amazing and have very interesting grain. If you think it looks good on the outside wait until you see the inside.

I am, infact, looking at buying a nice piece of Hickory burl. But currently I stick to making cut cups. My latest is figured walnut, Quartersawn Oak with bloodwood accents. I really want to make one out of zebra wood as well. If your interested I could post a pic of my cups.

Please post some pics, I'd love to see some of your work. It sounds beautiful.

It might be cheaper to do silicone but I dont think it would look as good... you are not going to be able to dip it but it looks like 2 tubes would cover it ... GEI is like $5 a tube... maybe buy one of those and try an inconspicuous spot and seal a tank that you've been meaning to seal if you don't like it. in fact I think that 1 tube would probably seal 10 10 gallon tanks. But after looking at epoxy prices I think that I would try silicone.

Epoxy would look much better. As the silicone will turn cloudy over time and the epoxy shouldn't and even if the epoxy does all it would need would to be ruffed up with steel wool and then recoated and it would look good as new.

I'll get a pic up of my stand tommorow and I'll get out my cups. They aren't amazing but I like them. I need to redo the handle of my newest one it has a pretty good sized blemish where someone bumped it while it was drying.

i was looking at epoxy online and it all seems like putty that you mold to stuff,
how would i apply this to my piece?
