sealing wood

hey guys,
i have a really awesome piece of wood that i found in the woods about 4 years ago and it has been hanging in the garage since. i was wondering how i could seal it so that it wont rot in a dart viv and wont look shiny.
is this possible?
the wood is a burl that was on the ground and is completely dry and my dad said that it would rot pretty quickly in a humid environment like that.?
 
idk if thats possible without chemicals. canola oil can stain wood but i dont think it would be that protective. maybe if you dipped it in silicone...
 
If its very big I suggest making it into a cup instead. They look absolutley amazing and have very interesting grain. If you think it looks good on the outside wait until you see the inside.

I am, infact, looking at buying a nice piece of Hickory burl. But currently I stick to making cut cups. My latest is figured walnut, Quartersawn Oak with bloodwood accents. I really want to make one out of zebra wood as well. If your interested I could post a pic of my cups.
 
heres some pics there is actually a little hole/cave thing and i was thinking that this could replace a cocohut... its a little dusty in the pics.. sry 4 that

and my dad does the whole wood turning thing as a side job along with a few other things so we've done that b4 very pretty pieces we've made
 
That is a sweet piece of wood. I don't think its big enough for any wood projects though and doesnt look sound.

I don't know how you could seal it for a wet environement though.

I suggest you get a new tank and use it for some dryer inhabitants.
 
my dad said epoxy too and i think that as long as it keeps the wood in good condition and the wood wont rot then im fine wit it being a little shiny
how expensive is the epoxy/where do i get it/what kind do i need? thanks everybody
