Have similar water to shrimpguy but I was a little warmer, 78-80, and my cherry's did great & bred regularly. Shared a tank with nerites and some baby BN plecos. Lots of moss and java fern, one large sword and some anubias in a med/low light 15g. Almond leaves, fish flake and snail jello. Everything WAS great 'till I got sick and my wife tried to help. Apparently S.A. cichlids like scrimps...a lot.

I use a bag of Purigen in the shrimp tank filter just to be sure. For cycling, I use a lot of sponge filters in my other tanks, so it's easy to move a pair into a new tank for a while and I've had no cycling issues even with my bare bottom tanks.
