Severum fish

Oh! I’m so ashamed & sat on the church stairs in ashes & sack cloth until they forcibly remove me. I located the 6/22 Facebook local group seller & see the orange is indeed the girl. I have no interest in encouraging successful breeding. The six in that 125 is enough, but I wouldn‘t mind a few babies who looked like mom.

They stare transfixed by the eggs for a few hours & then the feast begins.41977F5F-3A3F-42FC-9D1B-3A308E995155.jpeg

Well, you said you don't want babies much, neither do your sevs, yet anyway, lol. They may need some practice if this is a fairly early attempt. Did you see the male try to fertilize the eggs or just go for snacks? Female cichlids tend to be ready to spawn at a younger age (& often smaller size) than males. Having other fish may cause the pair to eat the eggs to "protect" them. Was there any fighting off the other (smaller?) sevs?

I'm generalizing about New World cichlids not severums in particular but they're all pretty similar. I know we had severums 40? years ago but I don't remember them breeding...

I think the female's fry would need at least a second generation cross breeding to get to even a 25% chance her offspring having her color...It's a recessive trait. (see Mendel's law of genetic inheritance) Yeah, & that's a lot of fry to raise in a couple tanks over time to get there, unless the male also carries that gene...It's a good thing you don't have your heart set on that, it would take at least a couple years...I don't have the patience to wait or willingness to raise or cull the "normal" looking fish. It can be hard to find "takers" let alone buyers for the number of possible fry...& they'll lay more eggs as they gain experience...Yikes!

Still, it's fun to watch fish breed without trying to save eggs or fry...& with enough cover a couple may just survive...

No, I have never seen any fertilizing or egg laying. They totally ignore the 4 youngsters. I wondered about the coloration should they successfully breed. Someone told me some would look like either parents & some would display hybridized colors. I would love to see some references on color genetics. Daisy is fish dumb but has a doctorate, PhD, in biology, comparative invertebrate immunology. But don‘t know nothin’ much about fish keeping .

That was a nice article. I don't remember if I ever knew that there 2 species of severum (severa was a new plural too, ha, ha) "rotkeil" & gold I've seen, maybe red spots but didn't realise they're not just fancy/older golds (well maybe in some way they are? ;))

I was surprised cg's sevs were not very good parents for more than a day after the pair were more experienced. Of course I've almost never tried to raise as many fry as possible (eek, too many!) Maybe they're more delicate too? I don't often go for "varieties" of any fish species like different color or fin shapes but there are many these days. I do think your red spot girl is pretty :)

She is a beautiful girl! Guess what! Yesterday someone gave me two turquoise sevs. She kept them with a pair of foot long year old albino tiger Oscars. And some smaller cichlids. I recently adopted a 8 yr old albino tiger that resembles hers, but is 8” long. It had been kept in a tank with a foot long gar, a few small angel fish & some 4” cichlids.

The new sevs are maybe 4” & 5” long. i had the bright idea my old girl may enjoy the company & then had second thoughts, so I put them in my sev tank with the 6 others of varying sizes. Everyone is peacefully interacting for now. Is 8 sevs too many for a 125 G? I have two Fluval X4 canister filters (bought system used). Per Fluval that‘s enough to filter 500 gallons. I am set up to do easy water changes.

The orange here is a male. The green is female. They live in a 125 G with 4 smaller sevs. The big pair has been laying eggs on the tank wall and eating them all. They engage in this liplocking thing as part of the courtship

That's awesome! 125g is a generous amount of room, but I wonder how it will work out with 6 or more severum as time goes on. I know the severum is a real beast to my oscar. Shoves and pecks at him most of the time like a pest.

My sev tank is sevs only. of varying sizes. none fully grown. If they need more room in the future I will get a bigger tank or use two 125 Gallon ones.

I believe a 6ft tank would be enough room for 6 fish the size of severums, but I'm not sure 6 severums will play well together as time goes on.
