An undefended cookie in any office setting, regardless of how or why it arrived, is fair game. I read it in the rules book.
When your co-workers return and ask if you've had a cookie yet, you just say "Cookie? When did the cookies get here?" ...and be sure there are no crumbs on your face.
Yes I do, Doll! And NO, I DID NOT TAKE THE COOKIE!!!
I've seen it ALL in the few years spent in offices before I started my barefoot and pregnant stage of life. I've been a stay home mom for the better part of 5 years now, and while the things I see in THIS office, can certainly rival the most disgusting things I've seen in the working world offices, I must say I don't miss the amazing and vast moronity (is that a word?) of some people!
In my last office, we had That Guy.... The guy that would go into the breakroom in broad mid-afternoon daylight and gather up any remaining food from the office potluck and take it to his desk to take home after work! Whether HE brought it in or not!! He even brought in his own empty grocery sacks on potluck day to take it home in! The department manager finally had to take him aside and inform him that he needed to ASK people before he took home their potluck leftovers. This is also the same guy that was finally put on warning when it was discovered that he was bringing in a grocery sack full of random empty boxes and containers, and putting it in the department fridge, just like everyone elses grocery sack lunches. Then, at lunch time, he would riffle through other people's lunches and take one that looked good to him. I mean, who's gonna question a guy heading to the lunch room with a sack lunch?
aknif, I know exactly what ya mean. We never had it that bad over here but we do have the occasional "who ate my lunch" email circulated from time to time due to a lunch grabber. I can't believe your guy actually had the agenda down to a science..... it MUSTA been an :joe:
There's a serious mooch in our office--he strolls through the offices, fills 2-3 plates, and NEVER brings anything in to share. The secretary hates him--she gives him nasty looks constantly (even when he's raiding neighboring offices instead of ours). We actually put up a bunch of posters to cover windows so he couldn't see if we had food as easily.
Some people just lack social graces. They don't understand office politics, it never occurs to them they are seen as a mooch, and most are shocked if it's pointed out to them. I've found that a polite "In the future, please ask before helping yourself to what others have brought in, and do not plan on taking your fill--sharing is a requirement" resolves the situation.
The law of the land where I work is if it's on the breakroom table..it's free game.
People will even bring in other stuff and leave it for coworkers to take: books, plant starts, clothes, open boxes of stuff from home no one wants...for example packets of oatmeal, a flavor of breakfast bars that someone didn't like.
When we have office potlucks tho....we put out a donation box for those who do not bring food. they are expected to chip in $5 and are free to eat what they want, figuring you'd at least spend that much on something to bring. the $$ is then used for paper products, or to pay for fried chicken for an office pot luck.
