Will shrimp breed or reproduce like snails?

Once you have snails in your tank, I hear they are basically there for good.

Are shrimp the same way?

For shrimp it will depend on the kind you have. Ghost shrimp are the most common shrimp and the female may lay eggs but they will rarely hatch, and if they do hatch it's tough to keep the babies alive.

If you have no snail eating fish in your tank then the snails will most likely reproduce, and you'll end up wth hundreds of snails in your tank, so if you need baby snails like I do, then I would leave them in there but usually if you have no interest in snails, take em out.

Snails multiply to absorb the available food supply. If your tank is overpopulated with snails, it means that your tank is overfed and undercleaned.

I am thinking of shrimp for my tank.

That red cherry shrimp looks pretty neat aquatic-store.

I am thinking bout some of those.

Shrimp are COOL.

I bought 11 ghost shrimp, and they are fun to watch. I got em a little over a week ago, and only 2 have died. They grow pretty fast too.

I have one that stands out from the rest, he has red bands on his legs, a redbelly, with red spots all over, guess what I named him...

I have kept dozens of ghost shrimp in my tanks before, they are very very cool (as well as very cheap). Their only downside is their relatively short lifespan of about 1.5 years.

cherry shrimp vs. ghost shrimp?

How big are your guys' aquariums? I'm thinking of getting ghost shrimp for my aquarium-- the cherry shrimp in my LFSs are too small, and I worrya bout them getting harrassed or sucked into the whisper filter.

The problem with ghost shrimp (or other small invertebrates in general) is I'm worried that they won't be readily visible in my tank! I have a 20 gallon in an octagonal shape, with perimeters of 4x8x16x8x4x8x16x8. The height is approximately 18, the depth is approximately 13. It currently has 10 glowlight tetras, 12 cardinal tetras, and 6 White Cloud Mountain Minnows (I'm planning to add two more to make them feel more comfortable, surrounded by tetras)

What do y'all think, and on a second note, what do y'all pay for cherry shrimp?

I want a bottom scavenger or bottom dweller, but plecos grow too big. Otos are not visually appealing to me, and nor are ANY cory. Eventually, I may get Otos, but for now, I want something different.

If you're worried about little critters getting sucked up your filter, cover the intake with a filter sponge. Pick up an aquaclear sponge of sufficient size, use scissors to cut a hole in the middle, insert over filter intake. Make the hole plenty deep, but don't make it too wide, it should fit snugly over the intake, that way it will stay put.

It will also keep bigger stuff out of your filter housing and add to your tank's filtration.

For shrimp, you'll also need to add some iodide to the tank, there's a thread about it around here somewhere...
