Shrimp

I WISH shrimp multiplied like those f@*%ing snails.

Snail problems are cleared up by reducing the food supply. I never believed it. I tried it and it didn't seem to work. Turns out I just wasn't trying hard enough because it really does work :D

Like Happychem said adding a few drops of marine iodine to the tank at water changes has, for me, been the difference between keeping ghost shrimp for a month and keeping them for going on 6 months now. IIRC, there was a parallel drawn between SW crustaceans needing the iodine for their shells and frechwater shrimp using the iodine to promote the molting process. I think the evidence for its benefit in shrimp was anecdotal but that was good enough for me to try and its worked.

I have never noticed my ghost shrimps gravid. They may have been but I didn't see it. My Amanos on the other hand are gravid every other week. I tried once with zero sucess to raise the amanos. Its a pretty involved process, at least by my standards.

Amanos are GREAT cleaners. Ghost shrimp to a lesser extent. I like the amano's hunger for algae.

I have a few ghost shrimp in different tanks mainly because I have heard they are good for helping keep a tank clean. My question is what fish are good with them and what arent. I was just about to put some in my goldfish tank but now maybe I wont since I just read this thread? Right now I have one ghost in with 2 red rainbow sharks and some type of a barb but want to add 2 angelfish and maybe a butterfly to that tank. Can I expect to see this ghost shrimp dissappear now... when I add those other fish... or never? I also have one with a beta.... and about 5 others in various tanks with community fish. I dont have any in my cichlid tank (I know better).

Any suggestions on where Ghost Shrimp are safe and not?

Im getting an african butterfly, and i already have a few neons; 6 but hopefully more soon (and a few guppies for food). Would shrimp be better for alge control (lfs has rock shrimp i think, maybe ghost) or would an alge eating catfish (pleco?) be better?

20gal tank, a few potted plants later (duckweed, densa, some other things)

i have a whisper power filter(20)...if that makes any difference

My understanding of shrimp were that they were more of a scavenger that cleaned up "left-overs" at the bottom of the tank. I think catfish or snails would be better for algae control. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
