Shubunkin growth rate?

So I have had this juvie shubunkin for a couple of months now and really not seen any growth at all. I honestly don't think he's any bigger at all. He's got plenty of space in the temporary 40 gal breeder. I'm just wondering are shubunkins typically slow growers? The stunted rescue goldie has grown a bit since I picked him up in October, but not a whole lot. I'm not expecting much growth out of him considering he spent his first two years in a 1/2 gallon bowl, but I am hoping to give him a nice long life at whatever size he ends up.

Anyhow - just checking in on the growth rate of the shubunkin. And wondering if maybe I should be doing anything differently. They eat flakes daily (I alternate algae flakes and earthworm flakes - all from Ken's). I do weekly 50% w/c. Params are perfect, it's planted (low-light), filtered w/ a canister (Sunsun 302) and an HOB (Whisper 3), and I'm sort of at a loss at this point on what else I should be doing or if all is well.

Thanks for any input! :)

I am not sure about the growth but it seems like you have a great filtration system going and keeping the water very clean so it sounds like it has a great home.

It could be very possible that the growth was stunted by being in a bowl but I could be wrong.

I could be wrong, but I believe the majority of goldfish growth happens in the first two years. They will continue to grow all of their lives, but the most dramatic increase in size (at least with fancies) seems to occur in the first two years of life. Maybe the previous poster was correct. Either way, it sounds as if he has a great home now!

sometimes stunted fish just don't grow any more once in good care if they've really been cared for badly. i would say this may be the case.

Sorry I should have specified. The shubunkin is a juvie, bought at the pet store a few months ago. Or I assume it is a juvenile fish (not stunted). The goldfish that it's housed with is stunted and was the one that was in the bowl for 2 years. He's a comet, and he has grown slightly, but not much. I'm not expecting a whole lot of growth out of him, but the shubunkin shoud (I think) hit 10-12 inches. That's the one I'm wondering about.

ahhh, gotcha. i thought the shub and 'the goldie' were the same fish in your previous post.

i'm not entirely versed on the growth rate/size of the various goldies, sorry. i do know that most fish do most of their growing in the early years though.

I dont find goldfish to be super fast growers. I got a shub I bought a while back and he cant be more than 4-4.5". There were times where it looked like he just didnt grow. You want a super grower buy a koi. My butterfly koi I bought at 3" and in a year over took my 13" comet by a few inches.

Just keep doing what your doing and it will grow. When I doubt go buy another one and you will see the size difference. Mine have 330gallons to swim in, doesnt seem to make em go any faster.
