hey, im new to this forum, so hi everyone. I was just wondering if anyone knew how quickly shubunkins will grow, yes i know they'll grow fast, but how much growth could i expect in say a year or 6 months? the reason i ask is that i have 4 small shubunkins (about 1" - 1.5") and when they get a bit bigger id lke to put them in with my bigger goldfish about 6" + and i just wondered how long ill have to wait. thanks

My thoughts are that it depends on the size of the tank you have them in right now. We always put shubunkins in our 300gallon pond outside and they grow at least a good couple inches over several months. What size tank do you have them in right now?
hmm i think its about a 20 gallon tank, but ill mesure it tomorrow and work it out definately. how big would you say i should let them grow before i put them in with the bigger fish?
I would consider diet before I would tank size ... if you are feeding them a varied diet - see this post > http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104870 - then they will most likely grow 1/2 - 1" per month - thats what my shubunkins have been doing anyway - theyve added about 1/2" in about 2.5 weeks.
I added them in with my comet/sarasa when they were 3" course the existing fish were also 3-4" ... if you have bigger fish which can easily fit the 1" fish into their mouths you might want to hold off - but I'm not experienced enough to say for sure - Ive never seen them eat each other.

My friend has a pond and has said htat they do not keep up w/ the other goldfish in terms of growth rate. They're also easier for recoons to pick off & eat 'cause they're slower swimmers too.

Shubunkins will grow at about the same rate as comets, given a good varied diet. In my experience, this is about 5-6 inches per year. He'll need a fish protein-based pellet as a staple, plenty of fresh vegetables, and live food as often as possible.
As far as how soon you can put them all together, today would be a good day. Seriously. These are not fish that eat each other. Goldfish will scavenge meat off a dead fish, but they won't kill smaller goldfish for food. My 10" comet could barely fit a 1" fish in his mouth anyway.
Since they're such peaceful fish, I wouldn't worry about waiting at all. I imagine that the larger fish are in a larger tank anyway, so putting in the shubunkins would allow them more room to grow, and the more room, the faster they grow!

hey everyone, thanks for the responce. iv just mesured the tank that the shubunkins are in at the moment and its 24" x 12" x 15", not sure what that is in gallons, any ideas? and the bigger tank is a 60 gallon im pretty sure of that.
well actually i was having second thoughts about adding them to the bigger tank as i dont want to overcrowd it and i could always get a bigger tank for them when thy get a bit bigger, i dunno...
as for their diet, i do try to vary it as much as possible with things like blood worm, tubifex, flakes etc etc. but im fairly new to fish keeping and i only got into it when i resuced some fish a year or so ago and it just sort of spiraled from there lol so any recomendations form you guys as to what to feed them to keep their diet varied would be much apreciated.
