I've had my calvus for a few months. They are believed to be a male and a female, and their behavior goes along with this because they are in a 29 and NEVER fight. During the summer, I saw the female quite a bit, and the male occasionally. But they never showed any pairing behavior, and almost zero interaction. They definitely are breeding size. Now, I rarely ever see either. The male won't even come out to eat when I am around. Absolutely nothing could possibly have changed since the last time they were active, from stock, to decor, etc.

I have also noticed that my brevis in the same tank are hiding much more than before, and the one definite pair that I had no longer live in the same shell.

I am very nervous about this. The cories that are in there have not changed, however. The tank is in a relatively secluded area, so they are not stressed by people/other animals.

Is there anything that could possibly cause the lack of pair bonding and shyness in both species? If so, is there a way to correct this? Thanks.

Water quality could be a factor what is your water change and filter maintenance like.. Also my Comps and Brevis are shy as well even in the 120gal they still run and hide..

Try redoing their landscape so they may feel more secure. For some reason they are probably not feeling secure. Also, the best thing I ever did for my Comps and Calvus was to add some dither fish. I am using praecox rainbows. I redid my landscape and added the rainbows and now my fish went from slowing starting to do what you are stating yours are to being out a lot. If I walk up to the tank they will dart to their caves peeking their heads out but then they slowly come right back out. Good luck!

I wouldn't add dithers your tank is not big enough..

Why isn't it big enough? Bio-load, or just plain size?

Size.. its sorta like squeezing a 400LB man into a Yugo..

None of the fish use the space at the middle and top, though. So wouldn't something like barbs, or maybe even some open water tangs work?

No open water Tangs for sure but you could add some Danio's like pearl or leopard Danio's for top water action..

Sweet thanks guys. I think I might swap the brevis with my leleupi. More action, but not a heavy bioload. That also frees up some space for another species in my other 29. I'll try the leleupi and calvus for a couple of weeks or so. If I see no problems, I'll add to the other tank. If there are problems, I'll swap the leleupi and brevis again.

This may be pushing it, but what if I just added the leleupi without removing the brevis? Would that be too much?
