hello i just got a metal framed slate bottom fish tank - can anyone tell me about these tanks - good bad - thanks - tim

well.. for one they're heavy.

the metal frame is held on with a weird tar like substance that never actually solidifies, so you may want to fill it up outside first to make sure there aren't any leaks.

got a pic ?

wow you found one of those?! cool :headbang2:

i used to have one a loooong time ago. it was down my grandma's basement back in the 1970's
i had it for many years with many inhabitants during its life time, freshwater fish, frogs, turtles, salamanders.
one day i cracked it by accident with a rock :lipssealedsmilie: then that was it :(
i havent seen another one yet
keep it and take care of it, its a rare find

you can put anything freshwater in it, i just wouldnt do salt water or brackish

have fun :grinyes:

yeah craigs list - 7 tanks, about 10 filters, driftwood, plants, powerheads, stands, tops all this stuff a guy had in his basement - not very camera inclined but i will try to get a pic of it up here - if its winter outside around here where is a good place for a test fill? - thanks tim

bathtubs are always a good option! i have a slate bottom tank, and its by far, when set up my favorite! I recommend flipping it upside down, and using a little sealant, just to double layer the corners, ..I always do this to mine. Since its slate as well, you will need to let is sit atleast a full 24 hours, mine always seems to drip, as water is soaking in the bottom. but once its soaked, it won't leak! would also love to see pics! good luck !

what size is it, I keep getting a mental picture of the last time I had to move a pool table....

my bathtub has a curved bottom and the tank does not sit level or even - i am worried i might stress and crack the glass on the tank - thanks for the idea - anyone else - i'll post pics when i get home - not sure of the size will post the demensions as well - thanks for the advice - should i expect the slate bottom tank to drip at fisrt then it will swell and be water tight ?? - thanks tim

i mean you could just do it on the kitchen floor.. just fill it up a couple inches at a time real slowly.. and put a towel underneat so that you can feel that to see if it's leaking.
