Slate Bottom Tank

tank holds water (so far - been about 5 min) brought it over to a freinds that had room to fill it and let it sit - sorry no pics (i'm camera stupid) but do a search and you can see what they look like - looking to it further is seams someone resealed it cuz it doesnot have the black tar as sealent - its not to heavy its a 29 gal tank (little taller really) i can move it by myself (i dident think it would happen from looking at it) - so far this is a reall cool tank - i got to try and find a old vintage metal hod and light now - thanks everyone - tim

I had many of these tanks years ago, and still use (1) 20 gal and (2) 29 gal. They remain waterproof as long as they are constantly filled with water. The water pressure maintains the seal. The problems start when you empty one and leave it dry for several months. The sealant shrinks or loses contact with the glass and usually results in a leak.
If you have one of these tanks that has dried out for an extended period, the best thing to do is scrub it as clean as possible, let it thoroughly dry, then apply a new, generous coat of silicone sealer on the interior seams. This has always worked for me without problems. Just to be sure, I always fill the resealed tank and observe it for a few days to make sure.

if it holds water now its fine
i got mine from my grandma bone dry for probably a decade or more, it didnt lose its sealant

lmao i recently got a small 2.5g one from my grandmas basement as well

well it seems to have a small - i mean not even a noticable drip on the bottom seal on the short side - i am going to let it sit and if it still does it i think i will try and empt it - gently heat the old black tar stuff and once it is plyable let it cool just a little and fill it up with warm water - the inside is already redone with clear caulk - anyone think this will work - or should i just scrape and redo the inside? - thanks -

on another note anyone know where to get aquaclear parts like replacement tops - not just motors and impelers - thanks - i got part numbers i need to just no parts

I don't know if I would try heating the tar, honestly, you could be making a small situation, ten times worse, lol. IMHO, i would just silicone it over where the drip is, ..if its still dripping.

i got the tank in ithaca ny - i got a metal frame 10 gal tank as well but no slate bottom - this morning there is no water under the tank and the seem that was wet yesterday is dry now - i think it will hold - i'm going to let it sit for a couple of more days -

It may be pretty hard to find a vintage top for it. When the switch goes and when the sockets get all crusty and corroded they'd get tossed. Some of the old tops would rust too.
