Bouncing around ideas for this empty 10g I have over here. I'm thinking about the possibility of having a tank with no heater. Are there any colorful fun fish that are small that would be suitable for something like this?

5 white clouds
a pair of rhinogobuis wui (not that colorful but cool looking.

I would say depends partially on how cold/warm it is where you are.. but zebra danios are often kept without heaters just fine.. at least they are in the fish labs in the building I work in, they must have over 6000 danios in un-heated tanks..

I'm liking the gobys...not sure where I would find any around here.

Temperature stays at about 72, lowest 68 in the house so it wouldn't be horribly cold. I think I will pass on the zebras though, they are just a bit too active for a 10g imo :)

There's the variutus x platies whom are coldwater platies and wud fit your criteria. They are not as colourful as their tropical cousin but defo more colourful than minnows.

I think the orange/blue versions of the paradisefish (which used to be quite common, sadly all I see now are the powder blue variants) are quite lovely, and even though most sites recommend larger...I believe that a 10 gallon tank would be fine for one inhabitant. You could also have Assassin snails (especially if you have excess snails you need to drop in now and then) and maybe a few ghost shrimp, although I bet your paradisefish would hunt them. They are cheap enough they can be replaced easily.

I'm sure there are rare livebearers and killifish that fit the bill of what you're looking for...you might want to focus your research in that direction :) These will probably have to be ordered online, and it's a chilly time of year for that.

Mosquitofish :D

Rachel has some Mexican godeids that are pretty. They are live bearers but they have really small spawns. I have them in my outside pond is southern California and they do fine. I have had water temps lower than 50 degrees and they do wwell.
