smart or stupid? fixing my power strips problems.....

As long as the loads are split-up well, it should be fine. I imagine you're drawing a lot more power than most people posting here thought, but it is for a whole whack-load of tanks. I'd personally want a dedicated 25A circuit for that(or a 15A 240v circuit split), but that's just because I never have enough dedicated circuits for all my electronic goodies.
already looking into adding 1-2 more circuits just for my fish tanks. the circuits i am using dont have much of anything on just my tanks.
