Snail fossil

Unhealthy obsession?
Just wanted to show you guys a picture of the fossil I found while on the job. I've worked construction for years and while putting in a limestone driveway one day, I stumbled across this beauty. Looks like some sort of ramshorn type snail, who knows what kinds there were way back then.

I've been thinking of adding it to my freshwater community tank but I'm not sure if it will affect the water in a negative way. Not sure, for that matter, if it would affect the fossil in a negative way. Tank is 72 gals. Snails and shrimp, a couple small schools, a couple of bumblebee gobies and a betta. Any thoughts?

Very cool.

that's so neat. i wouldn't put it into the tank though. it might start to disolve or something. if it were me i'd get a cheap shadow box and paint it then mount that inside to display in my tank area

Awesome! It looks like limestone; shouldn't hurt your tank, but like bluekrissyspike said it may damage the fossil eventually. I don't know the fossils up there, but it could actually be an ammonite or nautiloid rather than a snail. You should show it to a geologist and get a positive ID!

PM Oddball in MFK about this. He is into paleontology and moderates MFK. He has posted dozens of his fossil collections over the years there.

Here's his profile.

Thanks Lupin, I'll definately do that. It's too bad that AC username and password will not work on MFK site.

Thank you all for the intrest. I thought it was pretty neat find for being on a jobsite and having this just happen to turn up on top from a 20 ton truckload of limestone. I've always been a bit of a rock hound myself, but here in northern IN we've got gravel and limestone and that's about it.

Let us know what he tells you. Paleontology is not my field of expertise but I am always interested and eager to learn more.:)
