snails in a planted aquarium?

I just ordered some colored ramshorns. I think I should be able to keep them under control as my tanks are all 1-5 gallon in size and I am not afraid to squish if there are too many.

Many snails can breed with themselves many male human teenagers have also attempted this without success.

Pond snails and Ramshorns typically leave plants alone although if they're starving they may eat some of the plants (this is pretty much true for most snails). They typically stop reproducing when food per snail gets too low...

They may punch holes here and there in leaves but not too many. The healthier your plants the less likely they're going to be touched.

Usually if you see one of the more common species of snails eating a plant- it's actually being usefull and cleaning off algae, biofilm, or removing damaged leaves. It's doing your aquarium a service not killing your plants.

My snails don't touch my plants. I have at least 5 species in my planted tank- soon to be 6.

It's a lot easier to find snails that won't hurt your plants than it is to find snails that WILL hurt your plants.

I agree. I can't seem to find any that will eat my plants.

Most apple snails except for Bridgesii and adult Spixis will eat some plants.
Some Rabbit snails and King snails will eat plants.

BUT: the various species of ramshorns (not columbian rams which are apples), MTS and their close relatives, the various species of bladder snails, adult spixis, Bridgesii, nerites... all safe.

Wish I had spixis. :(

I'm getting some Spixis soon. Harder to find since you have to get them in-state. Just sent the payment off for some today... very excited about them.

I've wanted some for a long time- so I'm glad to finaly be getting them. Good luck on your quest I know there have to be some somewhere in Kentucky.

Yeah, I'm having a hard time finding anyone on here from KY. LOL.

Have you tried aquabid? Any on there? Or the sister-forum monster fish keepers?

I know with me, I happened to notice a fellow South Carolinian mentioning Spixis and so asked if she had any for sale.

I think they breed fairly readily (I guess I'll find out soon).

Yeah, I checked there, but no one from KY so far. I should be looking more often for them I guess if I'm going to have any luck finding them. I usually look at shrimp...lol.

I found one of my brigs doing the funnel thing on the surface of the water sucking in duckweed and munching on it. I LOVE my brigs!
