snails in a planted aquarium?

I think my Brigs and shrimp outcompete the pest snails for food. I probably have 10 or 15 ramshorns in my 55 and wish I had more to feed my assassins in another tank.

You really can't avoid having snails in a planted aquarium. Buy enough plants, and you will get MTS and bladder snails.

yeah, i know. usually when i see them munching
on mah plants, i move them from the 75 to
my 50 unplanted piranha tank. but i recently decided i want
snails, and havent been able to find info on
which one's are good for a planted tank. but
after all the helpful information you guys have given me,
im gonna run out and get some mystery's! forsure!

Be careful because some snails generically called Myster or Apple snails will eat plants. You want the species called pomecea diffusa, non-planted eaters. Generally the gold or blue ones found in pet stores are the right species.

whoa, thats scary. hahaha.
thanks!

I love, love, love nerite snails. They are the best algae eaters ever and do not reproduce in freshwater. If you want something interesting, they have lots of options from plain olive nerites (mine actually have somewhat striped bodies) to spiny ones such as Clithon corona (not sure if spelling is right). They won't overpopulate the tank since they cannot reproduce in freshwater, at least most of them cannot, but they will leave sesame-seed-shaped eggs all over, which I find barely noticeable. I believe there is a true freshwater nerite that will breed viably in freshwater, but I believe it is very hard to find in the hobby. Most come from estuary-type conditions were they live mostly in freshwater but lay their eggs where there is a constant change in salinity from the ocean or sea tides.

I have to say I have a real soft spot for so called "pest snails" I could do without most bladder snails but I love MTS (malaysian trumpet snails) and ramshorn snails. They reproduce readily but not over feeding keeps their numbers down. I got both species for free from local pet stores. MTS are great for burrowing through soil in your tank :)

I doubt you'll encounter the canas (Pomacea canaliculata) easily as interstate shipping for these species is banned although some stores sometimes sell them and mistake them for Pomacea diffusa. Canas are voracious plant eaters. I have plenty here and they eat every plant in sight.:22_yikes:

I have one pond snail in my desk tank. It is quite cute and no problem so long as there is just one :)

There can not be only one.

I thought I only had one for a while. Now there are babies.

I have tons of pond snails, ramshorns, Brigs & MTS. I love every one of them. :D
