I disagree with the use of treated wood indoors but- that's JMHO! I am building a stand also except for 2 55's. One above the other. Mine is made entirely out of pine 2x4's. I used sheetrock screws and TiteBond Waterproof glue. After assembly I began staining it with my choice of stains (Golden Oak) and let it penetrate. The skin will be 1/2 inch AC plywood which will also get stained. When construction is completed the whole thing will get a couple of coats of Polyurethane (semi--gloss).

The stand I will build next is for my 90 will be 4x4x48 x4 for corner posts Ties will be 2x4's and then skinned in 1/2 inch plywood also, except I think I will use birch plywood and really work the grain.

Hope I can do this! Hope to see pictures of yours when done!

That's why you seal the wood. There are lots of toxins in treated wood, even though they don't use creosote anymore.

That's why I am afraid of using treated indoors. I have been told that it leaches toxins. (My neighbor is a GC and that is where I get this kind of info). As well as a good friend of mine that has been in the trades for 50+ years. Wish I could find expert opinion from a scientific source. So I accept what the say. My expertise lays elsewhere! Aren't you glad? LOL

Ok, so should I then do the 4 x 4's for the for the "legs" and 2 x 4's for the rest? That seems to be a pretty common opinion here right? I'm not sure I am going to put the outside on, right now I just kinda want the frame part, although it would look much better and I may end up doing the outside stuff, actually yeah...I probably will, but for now just frame.

That should be more than sturdy enough. You could probably even use 2X4s in the corners and 1X4s for the rest, though that may require more alteration to the plans than you want to do. The wood is plenty strong enough to hold the weight of the tank; the issue is making the structure as stable as possible so it won't twist or lean under the weight. Be sure to dry fit all the pieces before you glue to be sure there aren't any big gaps or other problems.

I agree with Ogre....yeas that stand will hold the tank up, but holy overkill...and it will weigh a ton.
I hope you didn't just call me Ogre.

4x4s will be fine for the corners. Use 2x4s for the rest.

The way I did mine was make the base out of 2x4s on the flat (widest part on floor) then added a sheet of plywood (for shelf) then built another base on the flat. I didn't use 4x4s for my corners but built my own. Then I put my 2x4s on 16 inch centers for my walls (skinny side showing out) and base and top(flat) then laid on the top and lastly another piece of plywood.

Lady G,
I'm using these examples as inspirations for my stand. Maybe these will help:

You can print out the pics and write in your own dimensions to make it easier. That in combination with what the guys said above should at least get you started. Have fun.
