so who knows about notebooks

family tree maker version 10

and I have massive amounts of info
I just thought it would be easier to carry around a notebook on library trips

Sometimes I use LDS database, but since my family lived around here for hundreds of years (1600's) I use the genealogy society library they have great files and lots of wills and transcribed census', land records court records, etc.

LDS has lots of files because all it takes it just one morman in your family, they encourage their members to do their genealogies and post-mortum induct them into their religion (that part I don't agree with) if they want to know where they came from fine, but after I'm dead for 100 years don't go running around changing my religion to suit your beliefs, jmo

How much stuff are we talking about here? Check out the Panasonic Toughbook CF-M34. You'll have to get a used one because they're not made anymore. But they were available in a few different "generations" with differing amounts of memory, processor speed, and HD space. I have a 400 MHz model and it suits me fine for internet and office use. It won't play games or anything, but it does great for other stuff. Plus it's nearly indestructable and has an amazing touchscreen. I love it.

Dell has some laptops in that price range. You really only need a low end laptop to be able to run a word processing program and possibly hook up to the internet. Try to make sure it has a spot to hook a lanline into (highspeed internet, like a big phone cable).

I notice that Dell also sells refurbished laptops, and they will be cheaper or the same price with more features. And they are having a sale on them right now.

But if you can get used to a Pocket PC they are pretty cool and much easier to carry around. I bought a keyboard for mine as well so it is extra easy to input data.

It will have an Ethernet port, or network infterface card.

IMO, I would shy away from Dell, especially the low end laptops. The LCD on my wife's laptop (3+ yrs old) is dying. Same thing with my sister's Dell laptop (1.5 yrs old). My thinkpads, however, are doing good. The CD drive went bad on my home thinkpad (a21p, about 4 yrs old), but only cost $30 to replace. Everything else is fine. My T40 thinkpad here at work is awesome, no complaints since it's paid for by work :).
Don't go cheap on a laptop. You can always get a used thinkpad.

internet connectivity is not a big issue I have my home pc for that

I have all my genealogy files burned onto a cd and I update it regularly, very important to keep those files backed up

fast is good

memory I like it big :dance the more the better

other programs--microsoft office's excel and word of which I have both programs so the machine doesn't have to come with it ;)

I don't care about the ability to burn cd's I can do that at home

music might be nice to use a ear phone and drown out background noise, of course if I did that the I might really lose track of time

I know a girl who had a handheld scanner attachment on hers that was cool

being able to plug it into my machine at home and download any information I have gathered very important.

my home pc is a dell 4600, and for the most part I like it, I have a handheld dell axium already I keep all my nursing programs on it for work so it don't have much memory left

from reading the rest of your posts I'm going to stick with my inital assessment.
all you need is a 70-120$ pocket pc, a 900$ laptop would be way overkill for your needs.
