You can probably generally ignore this thread. Just wanted a place to post photos of it as I go since this is the first time for me. Don't expect much or anything very fast, I'm taking a very slow approach apparently. Hopefully by the end it will turn out nice and not be dead fish storage.

Blacked out the back of my new 40B with plasti-dip today. Worked great but it's near impossible to take a decent pic of it.

In the second pic you can see a thin line of light showing through at the top rim. It was a result of masking the rim and not being able to get paint all the way to the edge. I was concerned about how to fix that but luckily you can only see it when you are looking from above, light and lid should take care of that.

I like it so far, I never even thought of doing that for a background. Interested to see how it turns out.

Oh, and since I never really came across a thread concerning pasti-dip to paint the back I'll list my info/experience with it so far for future searchers.

Goes on easy like spray paint, probably easier since it's very forgiving and doesn't really run.
Ends up looking like spray paint rather than cloth or paper backing.
More durable than spray paint so scratches from filters and what not shouldn't be an issue. Once it's fully cured it is a rubber layer on the back of the tank not paint.
Cheap, pick it up at HD or Lowes for $5 or so. I used one can on this.
If I want to get rid of it or change it at some point it will peel off in one sheet, no solvents needed, no scraping needed.

It is pretty much the perfect blend between a permanent paint background and a stick on back ground.

EDIT: It's available in spray or liquid so you can use a roller to put it on.

Yeah....I have no clue. Debating on CO2 or not, DIY or pressurized. At some point I will have to actually pick plants and fish.

omg, that mario tank is awesome!!! (i'm a huge mario fan, still have my original NES and all three mario games)

nice job on the background SoapDoctor. i had to go back and look for that line of light, can't see it at all.

Whao, that is awesome.

Don't think I would actually do it though....
