Sodium thisulfate

Oops, I just went back to the site and he is Out of stock, but at least it's on the page which means he'll probably be selling it at some point.

Here's to hoping for cheap dechloraminator soon as well. Oh, and Dave? Re: Sig, it is back.

Thio used to be available from via photographic supply shops, but now they use blends, so that source is no longer availalble in most areas. I haven't made it up in ages. But then, I do not use much either. Greg should push it.

Harlock,
Do you age your water or is it straight from tap to tank.
The reason I ask is that JSchmidt (I think) uses Sodium Thisulfate to break the chloramine bond in his aging barrel, and then lets the estabilished bacteria in the barrel eat the ammonia. This just seems to me like a really logical way to go about things if one has chloramines and an aging barrel.

Hmm, that is a decent idea. And I just add straight to the tank from the Python. Since it's just the 29 gallon and ocassionally the 10 gallon Q-tank, I don't mind so much. When I get my big tnak, I may look into that though. I would have to figure out where to hide a barrel...

Yes, Dave, that's precisely what I do (at home, at least). If I am going to add chloriminated water directly to the tank (as I must do at work) I use Amquel or Prime. But at home, it is much cheaper to buy bulk sodium thiosulfate and use it for dechlorination; the bacteria in my aging tubs take care of the ammonia freed, in less than 24 hours.

How does the bacteria thrive in the interim period between using the ammonia in the water during the first 24 hours until addition to the tank?

Hmmm ... I really can't tell you much about Sodium Thiosulfate ... but I was under the belief that it would break down chlorin and bromine, but not chloramine ...

Greg

P.S. I sold 100% of my "test" order ... I hope to have it back again soon ...
