hello,
i'm switching from a 55g saltwater tank to a 125g freshwater in the near future. i'm just sick of always having to be doing something to the tank, wether it's dosing, replacing lights, cleaning, worrying about water changes, etc. plus just the maintenance is pretty expensive. anyway, i'm having trouble deciding on what i want to put in the 125g. i like the bigger predator fish, but it makes stocking a problem. i really like the freshwater barracuda, but i also want to get an eel. i really like the looks of the freshwater moray(gymnothorax tile), but that's brackish. so i'm having trouble deciding what i want to do, fresh or brackish. i'm also having trouble finding info on the eel and on the cudda. with brackish, the choices i'm finding for fish are pretty limited, unless i'm looking in the wrong places.

if i went with the barracuda, what could i put in with it? i like the tire track eel, too, but from what i've read it's hit or miss as to if it will get along with other fish. could i put discus in with the cudda? please forgive the newbie questions, i just want to make absolutely sure i'm going the best route and know everything i can about what i'm getting. i had a couple of fun times getting fish out of my 55g cause they caused trouble(which i didn't think they would, from what i read on them).

for the cudda, i was looking at either the Falcatus or the Hujeta. if i go brackish, i like the looks of the G. Tile, would that be ok with a figure 8 puffer?

this tank won't even be set up for another month or there abouts, so it will be quite a while before i even think of buying any of these guys. i plan on using a sump filtration method and using my RO/DI for the water. any help would be great, or even maybe showing me where i can get more info on these buggers.

ok, forget the morays. i finally found some info on them, and it turns out they will eventually do best in full SW, which will put me right back where i started.

anyone got characins? what do you have in with them?

Im figuring youll have a hujeta school of 6-10 in a 125g. That would mean appox 60 feeders per week. Withall those feeders its just a matter of time until they bring parasites, disease or infections.
Years ago a had 3 hujetas-they would eat nothing but live fish. I tried frozen silversides but they wouldnt accept.
A 125g full of Polypterus sp ( the smaller ones palmas, ornappinnis, delhezi) would look very nice and they resemble eels

Any reason why you plan on going RO/DI with a FW set up?

because i already have a 6 stage RO/DI for my SW tank. i figured it couldn't hurt to have crystal clear water. why? is that a bad idea?

there are a few things i'm gonna keep from my SW tank. like my mag 9.5 for a return from the sump, and the auto top-off.

what should i have in my sump(29g tank) to use as filtration. i'm trading a SW dragonet for a bunch of bio balls. what else should i put in there, besides carbon?

Well, with a FW tank, you will need the minerals available in the tap water to maintain and buffer your pH and GH/KH. Your weekly water changes will be removing nitrates and other undesirables, and replenishing your tank with other needed minerals. Unless you have tap water with some extremely high pH, GH/KH for the fish you plan on having, you shouldn't need the RO/DI.

I agree with ^^^^

you can use ro/di for top off but you should be okay with tap unless it way out of whack.

otherwise you will need to do similar stuff you did with SW tank.premix ..age.. etc..etc..etc

Discus prefer a warmer tank than hujetas don't they? I'd be a little worried about how well they would "get along".

Discus are a bit higher on the maintenance scale than some other tropicals. Although I heard blue rams were worse.

ok, i'll sell my RO/DI system. more money for fish :) i didn't know that, thanks! makles sense.

from what i've read, they are pretty calm(and skittish) and shouldn't be housed with anything that's territorial or likely to chase them. i do see now that the discus like a little warmer water.

what do you think i can put in with them? would a tire track or fire eel be ok?

i'm used to the maintenance part, coming from SW. that's not a big deal, i actually kinda like doing it. as long as it doesn't cost as much as SW.
