In my experience Sony is usually over priced compared to the similar HP model. I recommend HP laptops as I've worked with/on many HP computers/laptops and I've found they are one of the best pre-builts around. Their printers on the other hand... well lets just say I bought a Canon.

I've had both. My Vaio is a much better laptop. The specs between my vaio and HP aren't that different. Actually, my HP has more memory then my vaio & I beleive a faster processor (I would have to double check) and my vaio works better. Vaios rock! However, Toshibas are my fave. They have awesome customer service as well.

Thanks all, my girlfriend was interested in a laptop and well, let's say she found a good deal on a Vaio: 2 Ghz processor T5800, 4 GB ram memory, 250 GB hard drive, NEW for $769.

Great deal!

I have a HP laptop and it is great, however our desk top is a Vaio and it is exceptional. I would go for the Vaio if it is within your budget.

I do computer repair on the side for friends/family and such, as its always been my specialty. I fail to see how a computer with a faster processor and more memory could be slower or not work as well than another just because of the brand... if you had the hp stuffed full of crap slowing it down that could be the case in comparison... but other than that its impossible.

Also anyone I know who's had to deal with Toshiba's warranty customer service has always gotten the run around and never had their problem fixed until it was given to me and I did the repair myself, outside of warranty.

Sorry if that all sounded hostile, as I meant no offense. I just don't like seeing people waste money on a certain name brand that is more expensive just for the name, when there really is no difference.

First steps anyone should do with a new computer is install a good internet security suite, and then go and uninstall all the trial software crap that every manufacturer packs in their computers. Those 2 steps will:
a.) Speed up your computer by getting rid of useless crap
b.) Protect you from unexpected/unknown crap in the future

For anyone who is interested, I highly recommend Trend Micro for your home computers security. I've used it for years and I love it. It also doesn't slow down your computer by attaching itself to everything like Nortons or McAfee does. :thm:

my first vaio from like 7 years ago i still have and use... its big, but its old.
i bought another about two years ago for a ridiculous $2000 because it was smaller, faster and cute.. it was such a piece... something with it went wrong like every two weeks... it finally gave in less than a year.

so im half and half on vaio's...

my girlfriend has an hp and i love it....

Imagining every details where to be the same in two notebooks which brand is of better quality? Sony Vaio or an HP?

Identical parts? Then Sony. Hp has a bad track record with customer service. Sony may to..but they havn't burned anyone I know recently so the cake goes to Sony.

By the way ..>HP, Dell, Sony etc etc... I don't know exactly how they work it...

I imagine they get all there parts from Asus, Amd, Intel, ATI, Nvidia, realtek, Creative Labs...etc etc...

They dont necessarily manufacture the important parts minus Sony makes there own screens for notebooks I imagine.

Basically these guys are like Department stores for PC's that market them...=\ The only way to judge them is how they handle screw ups ..
