Sore throat remedies please!!!

if your throat is sore form some sort of bacterial infection. i think it was strep or something i forget but any ways hard liquor might help. it kills of some of the bacteria in your throat and im pretty sure you'll go to sleep after a few shots lol. i recommend wild turkey or Bacardi 151 has a higher alcohol content. but of course this is assuming your over 21 hope you feel better

Old time remedy is to gargle with very hot salt water. As hot as you can handle. Obviously not boiling and do not swallow.

I'm going to try this right now, I think I remember my dad suggesting this to us when we were sick with sore throats as kids.

Yeah, gargling with salt water helps...if the sore throat is caused by your nose running down your throat, an expectorant like Mucinex (Guaifenesin, talk about a spelling bee word! lol) will help because it will thin it out.

I take capsules of oil of oregano and garlic oil every time I get sick, works for me to abbreviate the cold...zinc and Vitamin C work too!

I'm not sure what caused it but it seems to get much worse when i lay down so maybe your right about my nasty snot running down my throat. I'll keep taking my vitamin c +zinc

Extra strength tylenol or ibuprofen usually works for me....but if you've already taken nyquil you should wait for your current dose to wear off first.

Many years ago (25+) my grandfather used to suck on zinc tablets whenever he had a sore throat...the rest of the family thought he was nuts. Then 15 years ago, research said that zinc was actually beneficial for shortening the length of a cold.

Who knew? My grandfather...that's who.

I'm wondering if they don't make some sort of throat losange with zinc in them? I have vitamins with it but I'd like to see if getting it straight to my throat would help.

Second the salt water. I just do warm...not hot...but VERY salty. You can do it repeatedly too. Are you sure it is not strep throat? Tis the season. Hope you feel better soon!!

I have nooo idea if it's strep or not, I've never actually had strep before that I know of. Just bad sore throats along with my colds. I'll have to google it and see what comes up, I hope I don't have anything worse then a terrible sore throat...then again...it can be worse???? :uhoh:

I believe the "sleepy making" ingredient in Nyquil is the same ingredient as in Benadryl, that stuff makes me crazy...messes with my mind. It's like I'm tranquilized, can't really move, but my mind is thinking all sorts of strange things. Not a "good trip" either, so I stay away from these and other antihistamines that induce this hypnotic effect.

This is exactly what it did to me! It use to work wonders but it had a very different effect last night. Wasted my money on a huge family size bottle of it.

Yeah over 21 and ty for the suggestion, I'm not too great with shots these days (partied a little too hard way back) so I doubt I could let it creep down my throat without gagging or chasing it with something else. If this doesn't ease up I will seriously consider it!

Thanks everyone that replied, I'm gonna give these tricks a try and see if I can get some relief. Ya'll are the best for helping a sad germ such as myself

............a sad germ, that makes me laugh Juice. Try some "killer OJ" with all of the above.....or not.

Salt gargle will help symptoms, briefly - to get at the cause (assuming it is post nasal drip), Max. Strength Mucinex (blue trim box) will help get the crud out.

If that is not fast enough, and you can stand some (spicy) heat, make a cup of tea w/ honey and as much of the hottest hot sauce as you can stand in it (a dropper is good - start slow and add a drop or three until you say "uncle", then top off w/ hot water and drink it down). You may sweat a little, but it will really get things flowing. I have been known to actually slice the side of a hot pepper open and float it in a cup of steeping tea. When it gets *really* hot, I pull it and finish the tea. To keep passages open, Vicks on the upper lip. (you didn't want to be around anyone anyway, did you?)

If it's particularly nasty and you have no other cold symptoms like runny nose and a cough it could be strep. I've had strep several times and I know just how excruciating the pain is. If it feels like a giant lump in your throat and the pain is that intense see a doctor. Strep MUST be treated with antibiotics and if left untreated strep bacteria can migrate and cause dangerous conditions like meningitis and rheumatic fever. I've been hospitalized with strep (it began to close my airway) so trust me on this.

The salt water has been helping with the discomfort a great deal, tastes horrible and doesn't last very long but it DOES help. As for spicy things ive been adding hot sauce and chile to all the soups i've been eating and that's been helping to drain the nose, just have to be careful it doesn't drip into my grub!
