Hey folks,
My tank is sitting on my porch with a gallon of vinegar in it... years of storage and hard water have taken their toll on it (I guess that is why it was free). I was told that muriatic acid will clean up the worst of old aquariums... anyone know what the stuff is called if I were to go to the hardware store - or will they know what I am looking for?
Once the tank is clean and I've checked for leaks, I plan to paint the back glass and at least get it in my office. I'm thinking about substrate choices at the moment. I have about 20lbs of black sand that I would like to mix with a dark, but natural gravel mix and some peat. I plan to make this a planted tank (low light - my reef tank in the dining room has enough light for a small developing country). Does anyone have any suggestions for readily available substrates?
I'd like this tank to be as close to a representation to what one could find if they looked hard enough in a body of water in South America. I'd like to see some neon or cardinal tetras and some cory cats in the tank. Are there ways any of you know that you can search tropical fish by their geographical origin? Please throw me some stocking suggestions! I was thinking Discus, but seeing as how almost every site I see says minimum tank size is 50gallon, I'd rather not (I'm a member of the "Tang Police" on the saltwater forum I frequent :D ). I'd like to be enough of a nerd that aside from the glass enclosure, filter intake, heater, and powerhead they swim around, my tank inhabitants will feel AT HOME (including native plants if possible).

Thanks for reading this long-winded post and for your suggestions...

I heard toliet bowl cleaner will clean any lime or hard water stains/oxidation off of glass. Be sure to rinse the aquarium out very well after using any type of bleach/detergent that could potentially harm your livestock.

It took me some fumbling around to find what I was looking for - but I finally found exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, Andr3w.

For anyone who needs to know what to buy to bring their tank's glass back from the dead ... MURIATIC ACID!!! Wow - $5.99 a gallon, and made the tank looks like new!

Another question... for a South American biotope themed tank (what I plan) what sort of water flow are we looking at? Pardon the question if it is a "noob" one - but I have a feeling the 10-40 times the tank's volume (as my reef tank is) would be waaay too much. I plan to use only a simple hang-on-back/bio-wheel set up for mechanical filtration. I would think that throwing in a poowerhead wouldn't hurt things at all, but I'd rather hear what you folks would suggest. I was even thinking of rigging up some sort of closed-loop setup using a maxi-jet 1200, my SCWD, and some PVC plumbing - but again, I have no idea what sort of flow is recommended for a setup like I am trying to end up with.
Thanks again, in advance, for your insights.

That is great to hear! That's more money to spend on livestock rather than equipment!

So I guess this puts me in the "research/find suitable substrate" stage of my tank's genesis... I already have the 20lbs of black sand, I can have the peat tomorrow (we use that stuff in HUGE bales at work to scrub/absorb paint spills), and a trip to the LFS will be all it takes to get some natural/dark blend of gravel. I see "Eco-complete" (is that right?) mentioned a lot... what IS it? Where do I get it? Is there a DIY or trip to the gardening shop way to get a similar substitute if it is something I can't easily get my hands on? Pardon if this is the equivalent to asking "what is live rock?" in a reef-keeping forum.
Totally off subject, but how/when can I import a custom avatar?

Eco-complete is a type of substrate used specifically for plants and a lot of people use it with success. I would suggest asking around in the planted for more advice with substrates and planting as the members who frequent that forum are much more knowledgeable than I am.

As for the avatar...click on the "User Control Panel" link in the upper right corner and then the "Edit Avatar" button under Settings and Options on the left.

something i read here mentioned having 50 posts to set your avatar
