Forgive me if this has been asked many times before, but I can't find the answer.

In order to complete a "fishless" cycle, I need a source of ammonia.

What do I use?

You can purchase a bottle of ammonia, or you can just use fish food. If you want to go the cheap route, you can just pee in the tank (seriously).

most people buy the ammonia available with no scents or additives. If you shake the bottle and its foamy, not safe to use. Using ammonia is the best way to be able to control the amount added to the tank. It can be purchased usually at walmart, or at places like ace hardware

What department of Walmart? I am a dope when it comes to dept stores, walking around aimelessly :)

If you have an ACE Hardware nearby you can use "ACE AMMONIA, Janatorial Strength Formula".

They have it in a quart bottle. It's 10% ammonium hydroxide in distilled water and no other additives.

I'm just finishing up the cycle on a tank having used this stuff.

That's very true. Human pee is actually great for kick starting bacteria that digest toxins. Organic gardeners often put human pee on their compost heaps. You should also pee on young trees etc, but only if you live in the middle of nowhere like me, otherwise the neighbors will have you arrested for indecent exposure! he he. Actually, best to use a jug. I am being serious for once.:)

Dose pure ammonia, or use the raw shrimp method. Turn your heater up around 85 degrees bacteria grows faster at higher temps.
