I've seen a few tanks on here and some in a (very nice) LFS in Austin using these sponge filters. I was wondering how good they are and would they be recommended?

These are the ones with the sponge sitting on the bottom of the tank and a hose going to a powerhead.

Thanks

kensfish.com has great inexpensive sponge filters. I use sponge filters in all my smaller tanks and multiple ones in larger tanks. Check out aquamojo.com. Mo uses sponge filters in a lot of his tanks. Very few tanks I've seen look as good as his.

They are a must-have for breeding tanks or fry tanks.

I have one in my shrimp and snail tank and it does a great job. The baby shrimp love to graze on the sponge for algae.

there is several sponge filters on ebay for less than 5.00 that includes shipping i have bought a few and they work fine.

Run many sponges..even in tanks that have HOB and canisters...quick bacteria source for new or QT tanks....inexpensive to boot....

Sponge filters are probably the best filters you can get. So incredibly easy, efficient and inexpensive. The only reason I can think of that folks don't make more use of them is they look HORRID in a tank....lol. It's very hard to hide them.
