Sponge or UGF?

Look into a Hamburg Matten Filter. I'm gradually switching my fishroom over to them. Using 1" foam from Joannes and 3/4" pvc lift pipes, they cost something like 3$ per 10 gal.

I'd vote for sponge anyday. no need for gravel = lower costs. plus theyre cheaper to begin with.

Whats the foam your using? is it seat cushion foam? if so, do you like it? does it work well?

ya in fishrooms the sponge filter tends to be easier maintenance and still cheap, also you can use them in bear bottom tanks.

For a cheap, easy filter go with a sponge...leaves the option of a barebottom tank too.

Okay... stupid question, but why are sponge filters particularly suited to bare-bottom tanks? Do you just mean as opposed to under-gravel filters which, by definition, require gravel?

yup that's basically it.

Sponge....not only great for the maintenance aspect, but great for fry tanks and establishing a QT or new tank.
