So I am in the process of making a super mini fish room and I am wondering which filter is better. I was thinking of sponge filters for quicker maintenance unless UGFs are much better. What do you guys think?
Look into a Hamburg Matten Filter. I'm gradually switching my fishroom over to them. Using 1" foam from Joannes and 3/4" pvc lift pipes, they cost something like 3$ per 10 gal.
ya in fishrooms the sponge filter tends to be easier maintenance and still cheap, also you can use them in bear bottom tanks.
For a cheap, easy filter go with a sponge...leaves the option of a barebottom tank too.
I'd vote for sponge anyday. no need for gravel = lower costs. plus theyre cheaper to begin with.
Okay... stupid question, but why are sponge filters particularly suited to bare-bottom tanks? Do you just mean as opposed to under-gravel filters which, by definition, require gravel?
