I have an old yet tough wooden dresser that Im planning on using as a stand for my 100 gallon (400L) aquarium. The tank itself overhangs the stand by 1.5 inches (approx 3 cm) on eachsides. A carpenter and an architect both said it should work out fine. Like I said, no worries about the way and the materials used to built the stand but my question is would it cause a problem if it overhangs the tank by a bit?

There is no way I would trust anything not built exclusively for the use of an aquarium to hold a 100 gallon tank. Especially if the tank is overhanging the edges by that much. You are talking about over 800 pounds of water alone.

:iagree: your first sentence scares me already "old yet sturdy". That's a lot of water it'll be holding. You already see people with busted tanks used with proper stands.

I found this site googling for DIY tank stands http://www.fishandtips.com/index.php Pretty neat... even includes cost estimates.

the over hanging of the tank will stress the glass!!!! and the seals will become weak

I agree... that's way too big a tank (and an investment time, money, and effort wise) to trust to anything not built specifically for it. I also agree that that much of an overhang is a hazzard.

A picture of the wooden dresser would be nice, it could be made functional, but by the time you do it and correctly, it would be better to just build a stand. Unless the furniture was designed for a tank to begin with, or correctly modified to support one, I wouldn't trust it. Especially with an unsupported overhang.

Not to insult the carpenter or the architect's input, but I wouldn't trust them to make the call on the dresser/tank being able to hold it for the long term.

There is a thread on here that I can't find right now, about a person redoing his basement after carpenter/engineer built tank stand failed.

Is the tank glass or acrylic? If glass does it have the plastic framing?
The tank is glass and it has metal-aluminium framing to it on all the edges.
