Will be starting to build a couple stands very soon, going to get the boards today. First I have a question though. Space for my tanks is a issue, I am going to be combining tanks/stands...I want to make 2 of the stands for multiple tanks. one will have a 55 and two 10's the other will be a 55 and 30g...does anyone see a problem with this?

Thank you Dbosman, that is what I was thinking but figured I best ask first before I tried it.

Hmmm, so I went to Menards and I realize..I didn't think about the fact my 30 is a bit wider then my 55. So I'm wondering would it be ok to just add a 2x2 under the "shelf" where the tank would be wider at, would that be enough support?

2 x 2 is a little lite. I'd go min. 2 x 4. Is this a vertical support?

Well I thought I could make the shelf then add the board under where the tank would hang over...so there would be a 4x4 (making the stand with) then the 2x2 under the tank for more width. Should I maybe add a center support board also? There is a 1" difference between the width of the 55 and the 30.

Thanks Zig...ya think a 3 hour drive is to much?? J/K.

So, new thought here what if instead of making the board go "between" the legs, I put it on the outside of the legs then add the board on that. Make the stand, then about 6-8" up add the 2x4 to the front of the legs or I could do it on the back side so it isn't as noticeable, then add the shelf on that?

Wait...had a "duh" moment there, I'm going to have to add 2x4 or 4x4 to each side (front and back) of the stand to make the shelf on, so if I add one between the legs and the other on the outside of the legs, and a support board in the middle adding the board 3/4" for the shelf would that hold it up? I will be using carpenters glue and angle brackets for added support to put the stand together also not just screwing them on.

I have trouble siphoning low tanks. Can you go at least a foot off the floor (or other drainage point)? It's a real PITA to try to siphon really low tanks, although they are more stable stacked. Just something to keep in mind...
