Starter 10G?

They are speedy little things, really hardy in cool water or unheated tanks from what I've read. I think they could easily outrun a puffer too. Worth a try.

Something like zebra danios, but not as nippy I think.

beta/clouds

I have had white clouds in with beta.
One beta just didnt seem tolike it and was happier alone,(well, with a snail)
But a second male beta got along fine. and they do look good together.
About the other combos with white clouds, I would think white clouds would be uncomfortable in a heated tank, wouldnt they?

Actually white clouds are better in 75 degrees. I tried it cool at first and raised it slowly and now have them at 75 and find them to be more enegetic now. (even more than at first when they were in 70 degrees) I'm adding a betta as soon as I can find the color I want. Off to the LFS to hunt today before work. I'm looking for a brilliant red or gold, or yellow....maybe......

go with the rasboras, that is what im prob goin to do in my 10g with a dwarft gourami and some pygmy/panda cories :)

I forgot, however the bamboo needs to have some of the stalk out of the water, so either an open tank or, reduce the water level inside the tank.

If you keep a Betta you need to have the tank covered. Bettas are jumpers. They will jump right out of the tank to their death, not of air but of drying out. It is a slow, terrible death.

Also, I heard that the African Dwarf Frogs are pretty neat. I was thinking of getting a Betta and an ADF for my tank. Of course, schooling fish are neat to watch too.
Definitely go with live plants for the Betta. Fake plants usually harm the Betta's fins.

Yes, there is a possibility of jumping, but it hasn't happened in my experience.
I have a betta in an open tank now, its planted and I think he's happy in his home. I would imagine if the tank was in a place with loud noise or sudden fluries of activity, they may be prone to spook, however in a tranquil spot, and heavilly planted with no threatening tankmates (or cats) around. The likelyhood of a jump is less. I'll let ya know. I picked up a betta yesterday and have him in an open top 25g with whiteclouds and 2 ottos. He looks happy as a pig in you know what ;)

Some betta are really peacful and they don't jump.

I'd be leery of putting a Betta with just about any fish. Some Bettas are very aggressive. I had one that killed some Neon Tetras, and started going after my larger SAEs. It really depends on the temperament of the Betta, though.

Paradise Fish and Bettas are also a bad mix. They're "cousins", and are likely to attack each other. (My money would be on the Paradise Fish...)

Dwarf Puffers are not good companions for any fish except otocinclus catfish, unfortunately.

You've got a point about the puffers, but whiteclouds are similar to ottos and if they work, why not the clouds?

I know my betta has given up on chasing them, and the clouds just move if they see betta coming over. There's enough room in 20 gallons to evade aggressors, and alot of plants for cover.

My lfs has a pico tank about 4 inches tall and a foot long with rocks and plants and a lil betta in it. They told me the betta has never jumped, but I'd be worried about 4 inches. I keep the water level low enough to discourage a jumper, and since the tank is a haven...I think they're quite happy there.
